Volleyball Trounces Pikeville in Three Set Sweep

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – At the Biggers Sports Center, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team tied a season-low with three attack errors en route to a dominating three-set decision over the University of Pikeville.

The Blue Raiders (8-9, 4-3 MSC) did not quite stack up to the 78 kills produced earlier in the week against the University of the Cumberlands, but a noteworthy 0.596 hitting percentage was more than enough to dismantle the Bears 25-8, 25-9 and 25-12.

The plus-0.500 attack mark is the local's second such effort of the season, and first against a conference opponent since striking for 0.506 back on September 14, 2017, also versus Pikeville.

Alix Stoermer paced a balanced Blue Raider offense with 10 kills, followed by Madison Bidwell's nine and seven from Alexis Smith. Defensively, Embry Burgess contributed a match-high eight digs.

Lindsey Wilson came out of the gate strong with an eight-point start, eventually utilizing a kill by Bidwell and back-to-back service aces from Logan Seagraves to storm ahead, 14-3. The Bears showed signs of life from behind the service line to softly trim into the deficit. However, the host's attack proved too much down the stretch of the day's opening set, as Stoermer, Aleksandra Wyrzkowska and Elisa Burzio each provided successful strikes to make up a 6-0 scoring run that would clinch the first frame for the Blue Raiders.

In the middle set, the home side recovered quickly from a slow start to take a 5-4 lead, then subsequently followed with three-straight kills from Smith to extend the advantage to 8-4. Similar to the previous frame, the locals managed to balloon their lead up into double figures, and score the final seven points to take a commanding two sets to none lead in the match.

Despite allowing a match-high 12 points from the Bears in the final set, the Blue Raiders still outkilled their opponent 13-8 to help them secure their second consecutive victory.

In all, Lindsey Wilson finished with 37 kills compared to Pikeville's 20. The locals also turned in 10 service aces for their third double-figure performance in the last four outings, with Seagraves leading the way with a career-best five aces.

Friday marked the end of the Blue Raiders' September portion of their 2022 schedule. The team will begin play in October in Crestview Hills against Thomas More University on the 8th at 1 p.m. CST.
