Blue Raiders Men's Soccer Takes Down the Bears in Competitive Battle

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson men's soccer holds on to a 4-2 win in a chippy battle with Shawnee State on Tuesday evening. Twenty-three fouls and nine yellow cards total were given out between the two squads.

The Blue Raiders win their second straight conference game after losing their first two on the road to UT Southern (Tenn) and Cumberland (Tenn).

Shawnee State were able to take control of this match first with an early goal in the 11th minute by Joao Toledo. The momentum quickly shifted away from the Bears to Lindsey Wilson not even five minutes after the first score. Sadam Masereka was able to pressure the Shawnee State defense enough to steal a pass away and beat their goalie in a 1-on-1 situation to tie the game.

The Bears looked to seize momentum back into their hands in the 38th minute as they had a penalty kick opportunity after a Blue Raider foul which was missed wide left by Toledo. LWC capitalized on the missed opportunity before the half with a free kick by Alexander Koziolek that found the head of Amin Fernouchi and into the back of the net. Fernouchi now has back-to-back games with at least one goal scored and two total.

Coming into the second half the Blue Raiders looked to extend its lead as Fernouchi found Alvaro Verwey off a stolen inbound pass, who then advanced it down field over Bear defenders to Masereka who outran the last line of defense for his second score of the match. Masereka leads Lindsey Wilson in goals with seven on the season.

As the game began to look lopsided in favor of LWC, Shawnee State responded with a goal off a free kick that landed in front of midfielder Bruno Rovares for a straight shot at the net to cut the deficit to 3-2. Rovares now has four goals this year for the Bears.

Lindsey Wilson closed the show in the 74th minute with a goal off a rebound by Verwey who sent it into the right corner of the net. The Blue Raiders managed to outshoot the Bears 15-8 with a 12-5 shot on goal advantage as well.

Henrique Cavalini ended the game with three saves for LWC and Kade Tomilson finished with five on the day for Shawnee State.

The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team returns to the Bluegrass State to face Georgetown College (Ky.) on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky. at Noon CT.
