Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 22-ranked and No. 3-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team fell short to the No. 15-ranked and No. 2-seeded Westmont (Calif.) 1-0 this afternoon in the NAIA National Championship First Round in the Lakeland bracket. Westmont now advances to the Second Round to play the winner of Georgia Gwinnett vs. Southeastern (Fla.).
The Blue Raiders were outshot by their counterparts 18-6, with a more even 6-4 shots-on-goal in favor of the Warriors.
In what was a balanced half for both squads, as each team had decent opportunities to find the opening goal. Britt Tonis produced the first chance coming from a Silvia Marchesi corner kick that forced a save from the Warrior's Goalkeeper Kailey Meyer. Westmont thought they had scored the opener from a Karly Kingsley back post header, but was called back due to offsides. Amelia Villa had a breakaway chance but her strike rang off the left post, keeping the game at zero all. Rayssa De Souza had an equally great chance herself, but Meyer stonewalled the opportunity. At the break, the score remained 0-0.
After chances from each team, the scoring opened up later at the 71st minute mark after Reese Davidson used her right foot to poke the ball away from the charging Maya Caon, and tapped it into the open net to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead. The Blue Raiders tried to muster a few chances to equalize the score from Emma Lindell but none would connect, leading Davidson's goal to prove fatal for Lindsey Wilson. Westmont dictated the play in their defensive third, squandering chances for an equalizer.
With this result, the Blue Raiders conclude their 2022-23 season. They finish with an overall record of 7-6-4 and a conference record of 7-1-2, bouncing back from a rigorous non-conference schedule, placing fourth in the Mid-South Conference.
