Women's Basketball Falls Short to Tennessee Southern

PULASKI, Tenn. - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team fell just short to Tennessee Southern 77-76 on Saturday afternoon at the Curry Athletic Center.

Lucy Patterson turned in a career high 22 points, shooting 8-for12 at the foul line, and adding on a team high eight rebounds to her effort. Maleigha Oldham also totaled 20 points alongside five rebounds cashing in on a season high four made three pointers.

The Blue Raiders started out the first quarter with the lead, not allowing the Firehawks to take the lead back after their first basket. Dayja Evans made a layup to push the LWC lead to eight with 3:10 left in the quarter. Lindsey Wilson would hold the lead till the end of the period, controlling the game at 16-10.

Tennessee Southern would use the second quarter to get back in the contest, shooting 53.3% in the quarter and cutting into the once seven point Lindsey Wilson lead. The Firehawks used the momentum from Takiyah Goff's layup to eventually take the lead 28-27 going into the half.

Coming out of the break, the Blue Raiders fell behind to the host with the Firehawk lead swelling to eight points. Oldham and Jordyn Stephens led LWC to overcome that deficit ending the quarter holding a one point lead 44-43.

Both squads were able to build tempo and trade blows in the fourth quarter, with either team never trailing by more than three points. It all boiled down to the final ten seconds of regulation when Sydnie Hall stepped up to the stripe and drilled both free throws, pinning the game at 65-62. On the following possession, Aaryn Grace Lester was fouled on her three point attempt giving her a chance to tie the game at the free throw line. Lester sank all three free throws, pinning the game at 65-65 and sending the contest to overtime.

Tennessee Southern's Sydnie Cooper would take over in extra time, scoring eight of the twelve points for the Firehawks. Cooper would make the final basket giving UTS the 77-76 win against LWC.

Lindsey Wilson returns to Columbia for the first edition of the Battle of Highway 55 against No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) at 5:30 pm CT on Nov. 22 at Biggers Sports Center.
