Women's Basketball Earns Statement Win Over Midway

Box Score 1

COLUMBIA, Ky. – At Biggers Sports Center, a pair of free throws by Maleigha Oldham with 2:55 remaining in the fourth quarter put the Blue Raiders in front, and they did not look back. Against a Midway University (Ky.) squad receiving votes in the NAIA's preseason poll, the Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team stormed back from an 11-point deficit in the second half to secure a commanding victory and remain perfect in this young season.

"We talked about it in the locker room, just staying calm and getting together what we needed to do," noted Oldham postgame. "We set a goal to fight back into this game, and that's what we did!"

The local's senior finished with a game-high 23 points, including 11 in the final 10 minutes of action, in which the Blue Raiders outscored the Eagles 23-10.

Lucy Patterson was another key contributor for Lindsey Wilson in the final frame, converting five-for-five on field goal for 10 points while also corralling six of her team-best nine total rebounds.

"We told the girls that this was going to be our quarter," said head coach John Wethington about his team's comeback. "We had to stop freaking out because of the pressure and apply pressure right back. When they used pressure, we backed up, and it was difficult to break out of it, but we only had five turnovers in the second half so we did a better job moving the ball against their pressure."

In the deciding quarter, the visitors opened up a 69-60 advantage just over two minutes in. Then, a layup by Oldham followed by a steal and dish from Sydnie Hall to Patterson sparked a 10-0 run to give Lindsey Wilson its first lead since early in the second quarter.

Midway was swift to respond, however, restoring its lead to 71-70. That's when the local's defense stepped it up another notch and held the Eagles to only three points over the last 5:25 of regulation. Patterson would tack on two blocks and four defensive boards down the stretch, and Oldham and Hall combined for three steals.

"It was a defensive effort that won this game for us," expressed Wethington. "They were getting one or two shots and we weren't getting any rebounds, but we had some players step up late and get us some rebounds."

Lindsey Wilson closed the evening on an 11-3 run, including clutch efforts from the charity stripe by Oldham and Amelia Hodges.

The latter of the two was one of five Blue Raiders to score in double-figures. Hodges and Hall both chipped in 14 points, with 12 of those coming from beyond the arc for Hall. Patterson finished with 15 points, while Dayja Evans shot 3-for-3 from three-point territory en route to 11 points.

The Blue Raiders continue their non-conference slate on Monday, November 7 against Berea College (Ky.) Tip-off from Biggers is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
