Women's Basketball falls to Georgetown in MSC Tournament semifinals

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson women's basketball's Cinderella run through the Mid-South Conference Tournament came to an end today with a 66-56 loss to Georgetown (Ky.) in the semifinals at Bowling Green Arena.

The ninth-seeded Blue Raiders (16-15) battled foul trouble, an injury, and a stagnant offense in the loss to the fourth-seeded Tigers. Lindsey Wilson entered today's game with tournament wins over No. 8-seed Tennessee Southern on the road and over top-seeded and regular-season champion Thomas More (Ky.) here in Bowling Green to reach the semifinals.

Lindsey Wilson now must wait to see if it will receive an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament next month. The national tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Thursday, March 3.

The Blue Raiders battled much of the second half with foul trouble. Three players ultimately fouled out and two more ended the game with four fouls. The Tigers (22-10) took advantage of Lindsey Wilson's woes, making 21-of-31 free throws en route to moving into Monday's championship game.

Lindsey Wilson led at halftime (25-22) but as the fouls mounted up in the third quarter, Georgetown seized the advantage. The Tigers grabbed their first lead of the game midway through the third and extended that lead to five at the close of the quarter.

While the fouls were piling up, Lindsey Wilson's Bree Glover suffered an injury that once again damaged the Blue Raiders' chances of a third-straight upset. Glover finished the game with seven points, eight rebounds, four steals, and four block shots.

Georgetown extended its lead in the fourth to as many as 12 points with the tactics of attacking the Lindsey Wilson interior. With Glover sidelined and Hailey Ison and company plagued with foul issues, the Tigers controlled the paint.

Lindsey Wilson struggled all afternoon to find its groove offensively. The Blue Raiders shot just 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field and uncharacteristically made just four of 13 free throws. The Blue Raiders entered the game making nearly 76 percent from the charity stripe -- third-best in the MSC.

Amelia Hodges, Sydnie Hall, and Ison kept the Blue Raiders within reach in the final quarter. Hodges finished with a team-high 16 points, Ison added 14, and Hall chipped in 11.

But Georgetown countered with a third of double-digit scorers led by the player of the game, Jazzmyn Elston with 22 points. Madison Darnell added 18 points and nine rebounds. She helped the Tigers outrebound the Blue Raiders 44-24 in the game.

Hodges' pulled the Blue Raiders within four (58-54) with just under two minutes left in regulation but a Georgetown bucket and two missed LWC opportunities on the offensive end all but sealed the win for the Tigers. Late Georgetown free throws provided the final margin.

The Blue Raiders now wait to see if they will have another game this season as their fate is in the hands of the NAIA Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Committee.
