Match One | Lindsey Wilson 3, St. Ambrose 1
Against the Fighting Bees, the Blue Raider shook off a slow start in the first set to rattle off wins in the next three and secure their first victory of the weekend.
St. Ambrose (Iowa) took advantage of a series of Lindsey Wilson miscues to go ahead 7-2 in the opening frame, then swiftly fell victim to the attacks of Moore and Pippin to see its lead fade into a 10-10 tie. The score teeter-tottered and came to rest at 15-15 before a 10-5 run by the Bees put them in control and clinched St. Ambrose the first set.
The second set, however, was all Blue Raiders, as a 14-2 rally with two service aces from Wyrzykowska and kills by six different attackers sent Lindsey Wilson off and running to a 25-14 set decision.
The tiebreaking third set never saw either side build any sort of considerable edge, but the Blue Raiders did have to overcome a three-point deficit midway through the frame to stay in striking distance. A successful spike from Pippin followed by a service ace from Szwarc proved to be plenty of breathing room for Lindsey Wilson en route to a 25-23 set score.
St. Ambrose appeared on its way to forcing a fifth set late in the fourth, leading 23-19. That is when Wyrzykowska took over and orchestrated a 6-0 swing that featured two kills and two aces of her own, ultimately concluding with an emphatic hit by Burzio to settle the match.
All told, Wyrzykowska finished with an 11-kill-15 dig double-double, as well as a career-best six service aces, while Burzio led the Blue Raider offense with 12 kills.
Match Two | Lindsey Wilson 2, No. 7 Missouri Baptist 3
The Blue Raiders saved their best performance of the weekend for last against the seventh-ranked Spartans, but in the end, the host's experience showed as they pulled away in the fifth set.
An 8-2 start to the first set got Lindsey Wilson off and running, with kills from Conceicao and Burzio leading the charge. Missouri Baptist countered quickly to take the lead and wound up holding off the Blue Raiders late to take a one-set advantage, 25-23.
In the second, Lindsey Wilson dominated in the middle with four blocks and a .286 hitting percentage en route to a set-high lead of seven points. Despite the Spartans working back to trim the deficit to three points, costly errors ultimately worked in the Blue Raiders' favor and a Wyrzykowska spike took the set, 25-20.
The third set started similar to the opening frame for Lindsey Wilson, as the Blue Raiders raced out to a 6-0 lead behind kills from Bidwell, Burzio, and Pippin. Just as in the first set, Missouri Baptist got itself back into contention and took a five-point edge through to the final serve to push the Blue Raiders to the brink.
The penultimate set came down to the wire. Missouri Baptist earned a match-point chance up 24-23, but an electric kill by Wyrzykowska coupled with back-to-back blocks by Pippin, Bidwell, and Szwarc flipped the script and forced a fifth set.
In the tiebreaker, the two sides traded points early and Lindsey Wilson snuck in front, 6-4. However, the tides hastily shifted for the hosts, and they carried that momentum to a 15-8 set win.
When the dust settled, Szwarc picked up a career-best 28 assists and added 12 digs for a double-double effort. Elsewhere, Bidwell contributed eight total blocks to go with her 13 kills, and Bergesio led the team with 16 digs.
Lindsey Wilson returns from Missouri to host Kentucky State on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. CST.
