Blue Raider Volleyball Completes Season Sweep of Cumberland; Wins 3-0 in Lebanon

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team scored a clutch conference win on the road on Tuesday evening, going into Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena and sweeping Cumberland (Tenn.) in their second head-to-head meeting of the season.

The Blue Raiders held the hosts under .100 on the attack, forcing them to commit 25 hitting errors, including 11 in the final set. Lindsey Wilson, on the other hand, outkilled the Phoenix 40-34 with top marks on offense from Elisa Burzio's eight kills and Madison Bidwell and Elizabeth Moore's seven apiece.

Cumberland got the edge early in the first set and quickly went ahead 4-1, then a strike by Burzio rocked the floor and sent the Blue Raiders off on an 8-1 run. The Phoenix answered back despite trailing by as many as five points and tied the score at 16-16, but Burzio was heard from again to spark a 6-2 Lindsey Wilson swing. Still, Cumberland never stayed away and ended up fighting off a pair of Blue Raider set-points, eventually earning one of their own that the Blue Raiders were tasked with fending off, which they successfully did behind kills by Savanah Pippin and Moore. The deciding point came off the hand of Ola Wyrzykowska and Lindsey Wilson clinched the opener 27-25.

The Blue Raiders showed more control in the middle frame, even as the Phoenix got out to a two-point lead in the beginning. A timely kill from Moore and a Wyrzykowska service ace swiftly tied up the score, and Lindsey Wilson only built off that momentum to piece together a 9-4 run and go in front 11-6. The advantage for the blue and white ballooned to as high as seven points, and that ultimately remained the difference as they took a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 second set win.

In the third set, Cumberland, again, started strong to a 3-1 lead, only to see it fade to blue as the visitors went on a 6-1 rally. At one point in the set, the Phoenix committed four consecutive attacking errors, allowing the Blue Raiders to take their advantage up to 13-6. With a couple of kills from Moore sprinkled in between another series of Cumberland miscues, Lindsey Wilson opened up its largest lead of the match at 19-9. Not prepared to go down just yet, the Phoenix muscled themselves back in contention with 13 of the next 17 points. Now ahead by a single point, the Blue Raiders turned to the swinging power of Pippin and Moore to seal the deal.

Monika Szwarc recorded a team-high 20 assists on the evening, her ninth effort of 20 or more assists this season, while Alessia Bergesio and Rachele Tessari dug out 16 and 12, respectively.

Lindsey Wilson faces its next task at 6 p.m. CST on Thursday afternoon when Asbury (Ky.) comes to Columbia for a non-conference bout at Biggers Sports Center.
