Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. - No.4 ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team (12-2-3) earns a spot in the final after a great performance in a dominant 3-0 win against Bethel (Tenn.) (13-4-1) in the Mid-South Conference Championship Semi-Finals Wednesday night.
Monwabisi Mngqibisa scored the game opener for the Blue Raiders, meanwhile Sadam Masereka grabbed a brace with two back-to-back goals to seal the deal. In terms of shots, the Wildcats held a 12-9 edge and a 6-4 in shots on target.
Lindsey Wilson struggled in the first 25 minutes of the first half as Bethel had most of the ball and 6 shots in favor. It was until the 28th minute that the Blue Raiders registered their first shot. From that point LWC steadily started to improve every aspect of their game, and most importantly were able to keep their net unbeaten after a not so convincing start. The defensive solidness paid off as Mngqibisa opened the scoresheet in the dying minutes of the half with the team's first shot on target. A goal that started with a nice team build up, connecting some nice passes to reach the final third. From there Mngqibisa started cutting inside from the right wing attempting a one-two with Felix Poschmann on the edge of the box who gave it back in the air and Mngqibisa did not think twice about volleying it from outside the box. The Blue Raiders headed to the locker rooms leading after a tough first half.
Both teams looked completely different at the beginning of the second half. Coach Buthelezi's half-time pep talk proved to be effective as Lindsey Wilson was winning almost all aerial duels, one-on-ones, and was able to play more vertically. Meanwhile, Bethel lost the confidence they had shown in the majority of the first half. In the 74th minute Jaland Larmond took advantage of the momentum LWC had and dribbled inside the Wildcat's box drawing a foul, earning his team a penalty kick. Masereka was given the responsibility and he scored from the penalty spot with absolute composure, sending Bethel's keeper Norberto Lima Vieira the wrong way.
A few minutes later in the 79th minute Masereka decided to end the Wildcat's hope for a comeback as he picked up the ball from the halfway line, outpaced three Bethel players, and finished it near post with one of the goals of the season. That goal marked his seventh of the season.
Goalkeeper Pablo Costa kept a clean sheet for an 8th time this season with 6 saves throughout the match.
The Blue Raiders will host Cumberland University in the final of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at 6 p.m. CT. on Friday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium/Ray Wells Field.
