Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. – Payton Cundiff has played a lot of games in his career at Lindsey Wilson College, and thanks to his late-game heroics against the University of Tennessee Southern, he will have the opportunity to play one more than any other men's basketball player to put a Blue Raiders' jersey before him.
Trailing 82-81 with 12.2 seconds left on the clock, the locals secured their fifth steal of the evening and immediately called timeout to set up a play. The good defensive play came after the Firehawks had muscled down a pair of offensive rebounds in an attempt to burn the clock in the final minute.
Out of the timeout, Jamyus Jones came up with the ball on the wing and then dished it to Cundiff who came flying around a perfectly set screen. Known for his quick release, the sixth-year senior triggered up a shot from the top of the key that seemed to glide through the air in slow motion before hitting nothing but nylon, bring the score to its 84-82 final.
The shot heard around Columbia capped off a 17-point second-half performance by Cundiff that included five three-pointers and an electric four-point play down the stretch.
All told, Lindsey Wilson knocked down 14 shots from three-point territory, 10 of which came in a second half where the Blue Raiders were forced to play from behind in the initial stages.
Tennessee Southern led by four at halftime and managed to increase its lead to as many as eight with 5:29 to play, but the locals ended up closing the night on a 19-9 run, with Cundiff contributing 11 during that deciding stretch.
Jones, Elijah Jordan, Jamie Strong, and Rodney Lewis all finished in double-figures in scoring to help aid the local's offensive efforts, while Lucas Ribeiro paced the Blue Raiders on the glass with seven rebounds and a block.
Lindsey Wilson advances to Bowling Green on Saturday where they will play third-seeded Thomas More University in the Mid-South quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. CST.
