Volleyball Sweeps Cumberland in Penultimate Home Match

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The (RV) Blue Raider volleyball team swept Cumberland (Tenn.) on Tuesday evening in front of a "Pink Out" crowd at Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson - who won its 11th consecutive home match - outhit the Phoenix .320 to .241 and held a significant 12-2 edge from the service line.

Elizabeth Moore put down seven kills in the first set en route to a season-high 13, while Savanah Pippin chipped in 11 on 14 attempts. Both attackers hit .500 or better to pace the Blue Raider offense.

Monika Szwarc passed out a career-high 31 assists, and Ola Wyrzkowska and Elisa Burzio each finished in double-digits with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Cumberland swung for three kills in the early stages of the first set to go ahead 5-2. A sequence of seven straight kills, featuring five from Moore and one apiece from Burzio and Pippin, capped by a Burzio service ace catapulted Lindsey Wilson to a 10-5 lead. The Phoenix trimmed the deficit to two points at 15-13 before a service error triggered a substantial 10-0 Blue Raider rally. Laura Milori dropped three aces during the stretch, and Pippin contributed two kills and a pair of blocks as Lindsey Wilson coasted to a 25-13 set win.

The Blue Raiders recorded the first four points of the middle frame and eventually blossomed their lead to 10-3. Successful attacks by Moore and Brenda Arango later on kept Lindsey Wilson in a comfortable position up 17-11, but Cumberland did not shy away and soared back to within two. Five different Blue Raiders managed a kill over Lindsey Wilson's last seven points and another Phoenix service error effectively sealed the second set 25-22.

Szwarc served up two aces and dished an assist as part of a 5-0 start for Lindsey Wilson in the third. Cumberland then took advantage of a series of Blue Raider serving miscues to get back within striking distance. The Phoenix snatched a 13-12 lead behind a four-point run but could trek no further. Four kills from Pippin over a 10-5 Blue Raider swing helped restore the home team's edge. An ace by Haleigh Wood followed by consecutive hits by Arango and Wyrzykowska solidified the victory.

Lindsey Wilson concludes its 2024 home schedule at 6 p.m. CST on Tuesday, October 29 when the Blue Raiders host (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) for "Senior Night!"
