COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team upset No. 9 Cumberlands (Ky.) in a dominating 6-1 performance Wednesday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium/Ray Wells Field.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders improve to 6-5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference. Based on results from around the MSC tonight, Lindsey Wilson sits atop the conference standings with two conference matches left.
Lindsey Wilson held a 21-8 edge in shots and tallied 10 shots on goal compared to Cumberlands' three. The Blue Raiders had five different goal scorers in the victory led by
Dominic Ayella who had two.
Felix Poschmann,
Sebastian Tregarthen,
Jean-Wikes Dutreuil and
Michael Rempel each had one. Rempel recorded two assists while
Jaland Larmond and Poschmann each had one.
The Blue Raiders got off to a fast start scoring first in the fourth minute. Ayella found the back of the net with Rempel picking up the assist to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead. Poschmann added to the Lindsey Wilson lead in the 20th minute while Larmond earned the assist. With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Ayella scored his second goal of the night giving the Blue Raiders a 3-0 advantage. The Blue Raiders controlled the first half holding a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.
Following a Blue Raider foul in the box, Salvador Martinez connected on the penalty kick to score Cumberlands' first goal in the 59th minute. The Blue Raiders went on the counterattack following a Patriots corner kick. Tregarthen blew past the Cumberlands defense and fired it past the keeper to give Lindsey Wilson a 4-1 lead in the 60th minute. Rempel played a low cross into the box that found Dutreuil who put it past the keeper in the 69th minute. Rempel scored the final goal for the Blue Raiders giving them a 6-1 advantage in the 86th minute.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Cumberland (Tenn.) for a pivotal MSC matchup at 3 p.m. CT.
