COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team fell in a shootout 4-2 to Cumberlands (Ky.) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Final on Wednesday at Ray Wells Field/Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
After two overtimes tied at 1-1, the game went to penalty kicks to determine the conference tournament.
During the first round of kicks, Cumberlands made the first shot while the Blue Raiders' shot was saved. Both teams scored on their second kicks as the Patriots led 2-1. Cumberlands connected on its third shot while Lindsey Wilson's third attempt went high. Following a Patriots miss,
Sebastian Tregarthen pulled the Blue Raiders to within one as his shot hit off the keeper and went in. Fabio Galeano clinched the title for Cumberlands as they came away with the 4-2 shootout victory.
Lindsey Wilson held a 22-16 edge in shots while the Patriots had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal in the match.
The Blue Raiders got off to a fast start scoring in the second minute.
Jaland Larmond took the ball to the left side just outside of the box and fired it into the top-right corner to beat the Patriots keeper.
Dominic Ayella had an opportunity to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead in the 15th minute but his shot hit off the crossbar. The Patriots turned up the intensity in the last 10 minutes registering the final five shots of the half. Cumberlands found the equalizer in the 42nd minute on a goal from Carles Diez Herrero with Emil Skursch earning the assist. The Patriots held a 12-7 edge in shots and posted a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
In the second half, Lindsey Wilson registered nine shots with just one coming on goal while the Patriots were only able to get one shot off in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
The Blue Raiders fired five shots in the first overtime with two finding their way on net. Cumberlands' lone shot of the first overtime was saved by
Francois Djiba. The Patriots had two shots on goal in the second overtime. Lindsey Wilson recorded one shot in the final overtime as the game went to penalty kicks.
Cumberlands earns the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament.
Lindsey Wilson must now wait to see if the Blue Raiders receive an at-large bid into the field. The tournament bracket will be released on Saturday, Nov. 16.
