LAURINBURG, N.C. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team opened the 2024 season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of St. Andrews at Clark Field.
The Blue Raiders (2-0) took game one 10-1 and picked up a 4-0 victory to complete the sweep in game two.
Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 10 St. Andrews 1 (7 Innings)
Cohen Achen pitched six innings allowing just one run on three hits with 14 strikeouts. With his performance today, Achen moved up to second on the program's career strikeout list.
Sam Gage led the Blue Raiders going 3-for-3 while driving in three runs.
Chance Stayton drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Following a leadoff walk, Achen struck out the next three batters in the bottom of the first. Lindsey Wilson struck first in the second inning scoring a pair of runs. Gage recorded a two-out two RBI single into center field.
Achen struck out the side in the second and recorded two more strikeouts in the third. Lindsey Wilson took control of the game in the fourth adding three runs. The Blue Raiders increased their lead to 3-0 on an error by the Knights. Stayton drove in a pair of runs on a double to left field to give Lindsey Wilson a 5-0 lead.
St. Andrews got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After back-to-back walks and a pop up, Garret Hamby drove in a run for the Knights on a double to right field. Achen limited the damage by retiring the next two batters via strikeout.
In the top half of the fifth, Lindsey Wilson added three more runs. The Blue Raiders went up 6-0 on a St. Andrews error and then 7-1 on the second Knights error of the inning. Gage drove in his third run of the game to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 8-1. The Blue Raiders added a run in the sixth and the seventh to take game one 10-1.
Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 4 St. Andrews 0 (7 Innings)
Jonathan Phipps delivered an outstanding performance in game two. Phipps pitched a complete-game shut out allowing just four hits while striking out 10.
Caden Davis went 1-for-3 with a stolen base while Matt Schultz was 1-for-2. Stayton recorded one hit in two at-bats and
Gabe Board was 1-for-1.
The Blue Raiders close out the series against St. Andrews on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon CT at Clark Field.
