Blue Raider Baseball Tripped by Concordia in Series Finale

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team dropped its last two games of the extended weekend to Concordia (Mich.) on Monday afternoon.

After the Blue Raiders posted a two-game sweep on Sunday, the 24th-ranked Cardinals returned the favor with double-digit outputs in both of their wins.

Sam Gage led the host's offense on the day with four hits, while Chance Stayton chipped in three runs batted-in to go along with three hits.

Game One: Concordia 10, Lindsey Wilson 7

Despite an impressive comeback by the Blue Raiders late in game one, Concordia remained poised and pulled away to seal the victory.

The Cardinals gathered their first seven runs across the first and second innings and managed to keep Lindsey Wilson off the board through the first four frames.

In the fifth, the home side felt their gears begin to turn when a sacrifice flyout by Matt Schultz earned Lindsey Wilson its first run of the day. An RBI-single from Stayton later in the inning, followed by back-to-back infield miscues by Concordia quickly cut the deficit to 7-4. Nazhir Bergen continued the Blue Raiders' surge with an RBI-double to left-center field, then Bryce Sidler responded by placing a single down the right field line to plate two and knot the game at 7-7.

The visitors were swift to counter Lindsey Wilson's push, however, and went on to add the deciding runs in the next half-inning.

Jonathan Phipps started on the mound for the Blue Raiders and recorded a game-high four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Riley Monheimer went 3.2 innings of relief, surrendering two earned runs on one hit and retiring two on strikes.

Game Two: Concordia 12, Lindsey Wilson 4

A 10-run fifth inning by the Cardinals erased a good start for Lindsey Wilson in the series finale.

Gage gifted the Blue Raiders their first lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-single. Then, after Concordia grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second inning, Schultz and Stayton combined in the third to put the hosts back on top, 3-2.

From that point on, the Cardinals took control and opened up a nine-run lead, ultimately resulting in a series split.

Mason Malone, Reed Marcum, and Gannon Herring each pitched for the Blue Raiders in game two, totaling four strikeouts and allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits.

Lindsey Wilson hits the road for consecutive days beginning at 12 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 5 at Pikeville (Ky.).
