042024 BSB CVille Day 2 Recap

Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Highway Series with a Senior Day Split

COLUMBIA, Ky. – On "Senior Day" Saturday, the Lindsey Wilson baseball team secured a doubleheader split and the series win over "Highway 55" rival Campbellsville (Ky.) at Egnew Park.

Four different Blue Raiders produced three hits on the day, including Matthew Schultz who batted 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Sam Gage, Bryce Sidler, and Gabe Board also chipped in three hits, apiece, for Lindsey Wilson.

Game One: Lindsey Wilson 4, Campbellsville 3 (7 Innings)

Jonathan Phipps fired a complete-game one-hitter behind a career-best 12 strikeouts and the Blue Raiders received some late-game magic to take game one.

Trailing 3-1 into the bottom of the seventh inning, Lindsey Wilson juiced the bases with a single from Gage, a hit-by-pitch to Andres Duran, and a two-out walk to Koby Wall.

That sequence set the stage for Schultz, who up until this point had not recorded a hit in the game. On a pitch deep in the count, the junior launched a ball to the deepest part of the park without clearing the fence, but it did manage to clear the bags and bring across the winning-run for the Blue Raiders.

Schultz's clutch effort solidified Phipps' performance on the mound and earned the latter his third victory of the season.

Saturday's opener had the makings of a pitcher's duel, as the first hit of the game from either side did not come until a solo home run by Jonathan Barham in the bottom of the fourth frame, his eighth of the season.

Campbellsville eventually broke-up Phipps' no-bit bid with a three-run RBI-double in the fifth, though it was the hosts who had the final word.

Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 5, Campbellsville 10

Game two featured 15 runs on 24 hits, with the Tigers earning a bulk of those numbers during a seven-run fourth-inning.

Each side traded one-run half-innings to start. Jackson Steele singled home Gage for the Blue Raiders first run of the game in the bottom of the first, then Board dropped a base-hit to left field to plate Schultz and tie the contest, again, at 2-2.

The visitors opened up a big advantage with their barrage in the fourth and tacked on another run in the fifth frame to go ahead 10-2.

A three-run two-out RBI-double by Duran in the home-half of the seventh inning provided Lindsey Wilson some life in the late stages of the game, but Campbellsville limited the damage and held on to draw a split.

Mitchell Buchanan (L, 1-4) fired the first 3.1 innings for the hosts from the bump, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits while retiring two on strikes. Reed Marcum and Brandon Watts combined for the final 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits.

Lindsey Wilson plays its final series of the regular season next weekend in Lebanon, Tennessee when the Blue Raiders visit Cumberland for a three-game set. Game one is slated for 3 p.m. CST on Friday, April 26.
