Men’s Soccer Falls to Cumberland

COLUMBIA, Ky -  The second-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team fell to No. 14 Cumberland 3-2 on Wednesday at Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The Blue Raiders held a 21-6 advantage in shots and had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Michael Rempel and Elvis Eddy Mwanje each scored for Lindsey Wilson.

The first ten minutes of the match were all Phoenix. Cumberland took the lead in the fourth minute with a goal scored by Luis Cerejo. Shortly afterwards, the Phoenix doubled their lead with a goal in the ninth minute by Philipp Schmidtke. Cumberland added to their lead in the 36th minute. Cumberland forward, Miquel Gelabert, scored his ninth goal of the season to extend its lead to three. The Blue Raiders had a 9-5 shot advantage in the first half, while the Phoenix had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. 

The Blue Raiders played with 10 men for the final 30 minutes of the match. The second half was much more physical with 13 total fouls, six yellow cards, and three red cards.. The Blue Raiders were able to break through in the 79th minute when Lindsey Wilson was awarded a penalty kick. Senior captain Rempel converted the penalty kick to make it 3-1. Less than three minutes later, the Blue Raiders struck again. Mwanje was able to make it 3-2. Lindsey Wilson had several chances towards the end to even the score, however were unable to find the equalizer. 

The Blue Raiders next take the pitch on Thursday, October 9, for a road matchup at No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.) at 6 p.m. CT.
