WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.) in a top-10 Mid-South Conference matchup on Thursday at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
The Blue Raiders (8-2-1, 2-2 MSC) outshot the Patriots (6-3-4, 3-0) 11-8 with both teams recording four shots on goal.
Paseka Maile recorded three shots for Lindsey Wilson, with two being on target.
Andrew Tomlinson and
Renny Caicedo each had a shot on goal.
Francois Djiba recorded one save, while Elliott Howell had a pair of saves.
In a defensive first half, the two teams combined for six shots with three apiece. Cumberlands recorded the lone shot on goal of the first half in the third minute. Lindsey Wilson was held without a shot until the 24th minute. Samuel Dolobaipu of the Patriots was shown a red card with just 23 seconds left in the half after a collision with Djiba. Howell then entered the game, replacing Djiba in goal.
Maile recorded the first shot on goal for the Blue Raiders in the 62nd minute. Howell recorded a save off a Tjerk Meijs header in the 68th minute to keep the game scoreless. Howell recorded another big save off a Patriots corner kick in the 78th minute. Meijs got Cumberlands on the board in the 79th minute with Zabir Taylor earning the assist. Caicedo had a great opportunity in the 89th minute, but Javiero Izquierdo came up with the save to keep the Patriots ahead.
The Blue Raiders return to action on October 16, hosting Tennessee Southern at 7 p.m. CT on Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
