COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team battled to a dramatic 3-3 draw against No. 12 Cumberland (Ky.) in Mid-South Conference play on Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
(RV) Lindsey Wilson (3-4-2) fired off 16 shots with seven on target, while No. 12 Cumberland (Ky.) (8-2-1) answered with 12 attempts, putting eight on frame.
The first half opened with both teams trading possession and feeling each other out. The Blue Raiders struck first in the 7th minute when Efua Asabel capitalized on a Phoenix mistake and found Lara Rocha for a wide-open finish down the middle for her fourth goal of the season to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0. Cumberland (Ky.) responded quickly just two minutes later, as Kadisha Martina slipped a pass through two defenders to Victoria Collins, who scored past Demi Serman to tie it 1-1. The Phoenix then pulled ahead 2-1 off a corner kick, when the ball bounced around in front of the net before Olga Wallemo finally knocked it in during a wild sequence.
The second half was packed with drama. In the 74th minute, a handball on Cumberland set up a penalty kick, and Asabel buried it to even the score at 2-2. The Blue Raiders are now perfect on penalty kicks this season, going 2-for-2. Just six minutes later, Asabel struck again. After a hard collision between a Phoenix defender and Leonie Schmid left the goalkeeper out of position, Asabel pounced for her second goal of the night and fourth of the year to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-2 lead. With time running out, Cumberland went into desperation mode. In the final seconds, Collins delivered the heartbreaking equalizer with only four seconds left, sealing a dramatic 3-3 draw at the end of regulation.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday October 1 to take on No.4 Cumberlands (Ky.) at James H. Taylor II Stadium.
