Women’s Soccer Powers Past Firehawks, 5-2

COLUMBIA, Ky.- The No. 22 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team powered past (RV) Tennessee Southern with a 5-2 victory on Thursday evening at Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (6-4-2, 3-0-1 Mid-South Conference) tallied 14 total shots, including 11 on target, while the Firehawks (8-5-2, 5-2-1 Southern States Athletic Conference) recorded 12 shots with eight on goal.

In the first half, the Blue Raiders and Firehawks traded early chances as both teams tested each other's defense. Lindsey Wilson's Leonie Schmid nearly opened the scoring with a header that sailed just wide right in the eighth minute. Tennessee Southern responded three minutes later with a shot from Mia Saum, but freshman goalkeeper Annabel Fletcher, making her first start in goal, came up with the save. The Firehawks capitalized in the 23rd minute when Kamilia Tayebi netted her ninth goal of the season to give Tennessee Southern a 1-0 lead. The Blue Raiders quickly answered on a Firehawks own goal in the 26th minute that leveled the match at 1-1. Ashiat Naluggwa fired a free kick into the box that took a deflection off a Firehawk defender who was trying to clear the ball.

The second half brought plenty of excitement for the Blue Raiders, who wasted no time taking control. In the 53rd minute, Efua Asabel found the back of the net off a pass from Vitoria Loiola for her seventh goal of the season, giving Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 advantage. Just over two minutes later, Asabel struck again, extending the Blue Raiders' lead to 3-1.

Midway through the half, Naluggwa converted on a free kick that sailed just past the goalkeeper's fingertips and into the top-right corner, pushing the advantage to 4-1. Tennessee Southern's Ellie Walker, assisted by Hikaru Uchida, capitalized on a defensive miscue to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, Lindsey Wilson sealed the win late when Amanda Parreiras buried a free kick for her fourth goal of the year, securing the 5-2 victory.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Tuesday, October 21, at 5 p.m. CT when they host Mid-South Conference opponent Bethel University (Tenn.) for Senior Night at Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
