HENDERSON, Tenn. – The No. 25 Lindsey Wilson volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend with a four-set defeat of Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon at the Brewer Sports Center.
The Blue Raiders – 19-5, 3-1 Mid-South – hit plus-0.300 in each of their three set wins and only allowed the Lions to attack better than 0.200 once.
Junior
Natalie Wandrie led a well-balanced offence with nine kills on 18 swings, while
Ola Wyrzykowska had nine digs, eight kills, and three aces.
Setters
Luiza Gonçalves and
Rylee Springer each contributed double-digit assists. Gonçalves turned in 20 assists and eight digs, and Springer added 12 assists, seven digs, and five aces.
Freed-Hardeman used a four-point run to take an 8-6 lead in the first set. Back-and-forth play tied the score at 17-17 late. A subsequent 6-1 Blue Raider run, with a block and kill each from Wyrzykowska and
Ana Clara Beltran Sacca forced the Lions to burn both of their timeouts. A bad set by the hosts and a fourth kill of the frame from
Brooke Robinson clinched the set for Lindsey Wilson, 25-19.
Neither side hit better than 0.150 in the second set as Freed-Hardeman outkilled the Blue Raiders 10-8 and held a 7-1 advantage from the service line to take the set 25-17.
Lindsey Wilson broke away from 4-4 tie in the third with a five-point surge. Wandrie had two kills during the span and assisted on a block with
Sofija Pjevic. Two more successful swings from Wandrie led off another short run for the Blue Raiders to increase the score to 18-10. The Lions clawed back to cut the deficit to 19-15 but ran into a 6-1 setback with three errors and kills by Pjevic and
Marija Raonic to give the visitors a 2-1 lead in the match.
Trailing 9-5 in the fourth, a string of three errors by the Lions, followed by a Raonic kill knotted the set at 9-9. Freed-Hardeman retook the lead on the ensuing rally, but Lindsey Wilson responded with a 5-0 run on kills by Wyrzykowska, Raonic, and
Duda Becho to create some breathing room. The Blue Raiders all but put the day away down the stretch as they turned a one-point edge into eight with a seven-point run. Springer aced twice to aid the push to the end, then passed an assist to Raonic for match-point. A 15
th service error by the home team won the set for Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders come home to Columbia at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, October 8 to host Cumberland (Tenn.) in another conference showdown.
