COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 25 Lindsey Wilson volleyball team reached the 20-win plateau on Wednesday night, defeating (RV) Cumberland (Tenn.) 3-1 at Biggers Sports Center.
Senior
Ola Wyrzykowska recorded her 13
th double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 22 kills, while hitting 0.358, and 17 digs to put her at exactly 1,000 digs for her career. She also chipped in four service aces and three assists.
Luzia Gonçalves dished out 41 assists and had 11 digs and four kills.
Momo Hampton got to 20 digs for the fifth time this season, ending with 25, and
Brooke Robinson amassed a pair of personal-bests with 12 kills and 11 digs for her first career double-double.
"We needed our two seniors on the court to lead and have a little extra fire power tonight," said head coach
Josh Kreiner. "I think 22 kills on 53 swings for Ola is really good, and 41 assists from Luiza, plus some tough serves down the stretch helped. Brooke is a freshman who we're going to be counting on for the next couple of years and we're seeing her figure out how to become an effective scorer. When we needed her tonight, she made big plays."
Lindsey Wilson trailed 4-3 in the first set before a Cumberland service error sparked a 5-1 run that included four total Phoenix miscues. Back-to-back kills by the visitors made the score 8-7, but another service error opened a massive 9-2 shift for the Blue Raiders. Wyrzykowska struck for three kills and one ace within the scoring rally, and
Sofija Pjevic added two kills. Cumberland, however, made it close late and cut the Blue Raiders' lead down to 21-19. After a couple traded points,
Marija Raonic and Robinson connected one back-to-back kills to clinch the set, 25-21.
Cumberland, again, got off to a strong start in the second frame to go ahead 12-10. From that point, the Lindsey Wilson offense kicked up another gear to outscore the Phoenix 15-2 to the end of the set. Wyrzykowska, Robinson, Raonic, and even Hampton contributed kills during the run, plus two blocks each from Pjevic and Raonic. Three straight kills by Robinson and Wyrzykowska capped off a six-point Blue Raider run to end the set.
Lindsey Wilson used a nine-point spurt early in the third, with three
Layla HuYoung aces, to build a 10-4 advantage. Cumberland countered to take a 16-15 lead and never let the Blue Raiders back in front to force a fourth set.
A Phoenix hitting error and two aces by Wyrzykowska helped Lindsey Wilson out to a 3-0 edge in the final set. The road team got back into it with five straight points and eventually went into a Blue Raider timeout up 13-9. Out of the break, Wyrzykowska came through with a kill and service ace as part of an 8-2 rally. Cumberland still stuck around to knot the set at 23-23, then the back-and-forth sequence commenced. Lindsey Wilson earned six match-points, and the Phoenix garnered themselves one set-point. A total of 10 kills were counted between both teams after the score became tied at 24-24. On the Blue Raiders' sixth match-point, the Phoenix attacker came up short on her swing and hit into the net, this following a Robinson kill to break a 30-30 tie.
Lindsey Wilson takes another brief break from conference play on Saturday, October 11 in Grayson, Kentucky when they challenge No. 20 Indiana Kokomo and Kentucky Christian.
