Baseball’s Comeback Falls Short at No. 5 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.- Lindsey Wilson falls to No. 5 ranked Patriots of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 13-12 on Wednesday at Terry Stigall Field at Doyle Buhl Stadium

Drake Young led the offense for the Blue Raiders going 2-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and five RBIs. Chance Stayton and Matthew Schultz two RBIs apiece to add to the Lindsey Wilson run total. Jack Ballou and Jacob Jackson spent the most time on the mound today for the Blue Raiders pitching 1.2 innings apiece. Ballou gave up no runs on zero hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Jackson gave up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts and no walks. 

After a scoreless first inning for the Blue Raiders and a 3-run inning for the Patriots, Bryce Sidler singles to center field in the top of the second becoming the first baserunner for Lindsey Wilson. With one out and a Sidler on first, Drake Young went yard for a two-run homerun cutting the Patriot lead to 3-2. 

Trey Price got aboard on a wild-pitch and stole second as Matthew Schultz stepped to the plate. Schultz singled to center field, scoring Price and tying the game 3-3. With Schultz advancing to third on a single by Chance Stayton, Andres Duran grounded into a double-play at first and second, scoring Schultz extending the lead to 4-3. Cumberlands would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth gaining an 8-4 advantage until the top of the sixth. 

With bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Price grounded into a fielder's choice at second, scoring Young from third and finding himself safe at first. Schultz stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and singled, scoring Andino, advancing Price to second, cutting the Patriots lead to 8-6. Lindsey Wilson tied the game 8-8 on a 2-RBI double down the left field line from Stayton. The Cumberlands answered back with a solo shot over the left field wall and tallied four more runs before taking a 13-8 lead into the eighth. 

After a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, the Blue Raiders rallied. After Amir Pineiro grounded out to third, Duran boarded on a walk and advanced to second after Sidler was hit by a pitch. Young stepped up to the plate connecting on a ball with two runners on and one out to send a 3-run shot over the left field wall for his second homer of the day, putting the Blue Raiders back within two runs at 13-11. Andino doubled to right field followed by a single from Tucker Hagan to put runners on the corners for Lindsey Wilson. After a Jackson Steele struck-out swinging LWC looked to put together a two-out rally as Braxton Smith came in to pinch run Hagan. Andino scored the final Blue Raider run, scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt at first. Price was then hit by a pitch before Schultz grounded out ending the Blue Raider rally.

Blue Raider baseball will be back in action on March 1, at 1 p.m. CST to take on the Indiana Institute of Technology in their home opening 4-game series at Egnew Park
