Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short; Blue Raiders Drop 12-9 Decision at Midway

MIDWAY, Ky.- The Blue Raider baseball team dropped a road game to Midway (Ky.) on Tracy Farmer Field 12-9.

Matt Schultz and Santiago Gonzalez combined for four hits on the day to lead the Blue Raider offense. Schultz and Gray Colvin tallied two RBIs apiece, driving in four of the nine runs on the day. Ethan Fain (0-1) will pick up the loss on the day, firing 0.1 innings and giving up four runs on two hits. 

Lindsey Wilson was held scoreless through the first two innings, with Schultz drawing a walk in the first and Andres Duran taking a base after getting hit by a pitch. Midway tallied a run in the bottom of both innings taking an early 2-0 advantage. 

Amir Pineiro led off the top of the third after reaching on an error by the third baseman as Braxton Smith entered to pinch run. Gonzalez was able to lay down a bunt, boarding first and advancing Smith to second. Caden Davis drew another walk, loading the bases for Schultz who singled into left field, scoring Smith and Gonzalez to tie the game at 2-2. 

Lindsey Wilson held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the third, Diego Andino led off the top of the fourth and drew a walk, advancing to second on a grounder hit by Jackson Steele who was out at first. Pineiro doubled into left center, scoring Andino from third, and extended the lead to 3-2 for the Blue Raiders. With Smith on second to pinch run again for Pineiro, Gonzalez singled to left field, scoring Smith for a 4-2 lead.

The Blue Raiders were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning while Midway was able to tack on a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3 headed into the seventh. 

With Drake Young on third in the top of the seventh inning, Steele flew out to right field, which allowed Young to tag up on third to score, extending the lead to 5-3. Eli Glasscock led off the bottom of the frame for the Eagles, and singled, putting a runner on base for Peyton Henry, who connected on a two-run home run to tie up the game at 5-5. Midway scored six more runs in the inning and added a run in the eighth to take a 12-5 lead.

After falling behind 12-5, Schultz entered the game to pinch hit for Young and singled to left field then proceeded to steal second to lead off the top of the ninth. Bryce Sidler drew the walk, putting runners on first and second for Duran. Duran singled through the right side, scoring Schultz from second, and advancing Sidler from first to second for a 12-6 deficit. Sidler and Duran stole second and third, with Andino in the batter's box. Andino reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, and scored Sidler from third, to cut the deficit to 12-7. With Duran on third, Andino stole second. Colvin stepped into the batter's box and singled to center field, scoring Duran and Andino for the Blue Raiders to trail 12-9. The ninth inning rally fell short, as Midway outlasts Lindsey Wilson 12-9

The Blue Raider baseball team will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday in Egnew Park for a three-game series with the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Game one will occur on Saturday with Senior day taking place before the first pitch is thrown at 2 pm CST, followed by games two and three on Sunday at Noon and 3 pm CST.
