The Blue Raiders committed a season-low eight attack errors and hit a season-best 0.354 to roll past the Eagles in a straight-set decision.
Lindsey Wilson got significant help from its defense, limiting Faulkner to 0.041 behind eight blocks.
Ana Clara Beltran Sacca played relentlessly at the net with six kills on 13 swings, six blocks, and zero hitting errors.
In the first set, Faulkner found the early two-point edge, up 8-6. Back-to-back kills by
Marija Raonic and Hampton, however, triggered a massive 15-1 run by the Blue Raiders that included eight kills and three service aces from Fernandez Garcia. Any signs of life late for the Eagles were squandered by a Gonçalves ace and joint block with Raonic and
Sofija Pjevic.
Adjacent runs by both sides opened the middle frame. Kills from Wyrzykowska and Raonic pieced together a three-point spurt to give Lindsey Wilson a 12-8 lead and the Eagles never got back. Sacca picked up two of the Blue Raider' last five points on a kill and solo block, and Fernandez Garcia ended the set with another ace.
Faulkner grabbed the first point of the third but subsequently hit into three errors after a Raonic kill to fall behind 4-1. Lindsey Wilson maintained its control on the set and used a four-point run later on with kills by Raonic and Pjevic to ultimately ice the match.
Match Two: Lindsey Wilson 3, Tennessee Southern 0
Fernandez Garcia pummeled the Firehawk defense with 15 kills and four service aces and Wyrzykowska came two digs shy of a double-double as Lindsey Wilson grounded Tennessee Southern.
Five consecutive points by the Blue Raiders quickly tilted momentum in the visitor's favor. Gonçalves passed out two assists and contributed two kills of her own during the initial rally. The 'Hawks worked their way back in contention and cut Lindsey Wilson's lead to 21-20, but a set-sealing four-point string with two kills and ace by Fernandez Garcia silenced the hosts.
In the second set, Tennessee Southern created a three-point advantage with a 10-7 lead. Another Fernandez Garcia kill got the Blue Raiders locked in and ignited an 18-4 stretch, during which the 'Hawks made seven attack miscues. Fernandez Garica, Wyrzykowska, and Pjevic each turned in two kills around the Tennessee Southern errors. All told, Lindsey Wilson hit 0.440 in the second frame.
The Blue Raiders coasted through the final set of the day, starting with a 9-1 lead with two kills from Fernandez Garcia, a block and kill by Gonçalves, and a kill off the hand of Pjevic. Tennessee Southern threatened with an 8-3 turnaround, only to be countered by a 6-2 Lindsey Wilson run, which was enough to propel the road team to victory. Wyrzykowska stepped up for four kills over the Blue Raiders' last seven points.
