Volleyball Shows Tenacity at No. 14 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team displayed flashes of grit and resilience against 14th-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday evening, but at the end of night, the homestanding Patriots had put forth all the mettle necessary to defeat the Blue Raiders in a straight-set decision.

Ola Wyrzykowska – 15 kills and 14 digs, – Luiza Gonçalves – 29 assists and 11 digs, – and Petra Fernandez Garcia – 10 kills and 11 digs – each turned in double-double efforts, while Momo Hampton also finished in double figures in digs with 13.

Both sides were strong at the net. Lindsey Wilson bested the Patriots 7-5 in total blocks, led by Gonçalves' four and three from Ana Clara Beltran Sacca.

A service error by the visitors abled Cumberlands to slip ahead 5-4 in the first set. Back-to-back kills by Fernandez Garcia and Wyrzykowska subsequently started a 6-1 Blue Raider run to give them a 10-6 lead into a Patriots timeout. Out of the break, Cumberlands scored seven of the next eight points and the set turned into back-and-forth, swing-for-swing affair. Tied at 19-19, consecutive kills from the Patriots began a deciding 6-1 run that won the hosts the opening set 25-20.

Cumberlands outhit Lindsey Wilson 0.222 to 0.051 in the middle frame and never the Blue Raiders score more than three straight points en route to a 25-18 set win.

Lindsey Wilson showcased its best offensive performance of the match in the third, hitting 0.261. Successful strikes from Gonçalves, Sacca, and Wyrzykowska helped the Blue Raiders out to a 4-2 advantage early. Even as the Patriots battled back, Lindsey Wilson managed to build its lead to as many as four points with help from back-to-back Wyrzykowska kills to improve the score to 16-12. Cumberlands proceeded to tally a 6-1 response, however, and a final spar at the end went the home team's way to seal the result.

Lindsey Wilson turns right around to visit Campbellsville (Ky.) at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, September 25.
