Men’s Wrestling Posts Four Top-Five Finishes at Hawk Classic Open

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lindsey Wilson men's wrestling team recorded four top-five finishes at the Hawk Classic Open on Sunday at Garrett Coliseum.

The Blue Raiders finished seventh in the team standings with 54 points. Life (Ga.) finished first with 105.5 points while Huntingdon (Ala.) was second with 83.5 points.

Brandon Irigoyen posted the best Blue Raider finishing runner-up in the 157-pound bracket. After earning a first round bye, Irigoyen pinned Bluefield State's Oluwajuwon Omotoso. He advanced to the semifinals with an 11-2 major decision over Truett McConnell's Chase Bond. Irigoyen punched his ticket to the finals with a 7-3 decision over Life's Colson Elliot. He was defeated 18-0 in the finals by Bradley Williams.

Emmaunel Celesetine (No. 22 at 157 pounds) finished third at 157 pounds. Celestine opened his tournament with an 11-4 decision over Montevallo's Brock Fields. He dropped to the consolation bracket after being defeated by Bradley Williams. Celestine then went on to record four straight victories to finish third. He earned a 15-3 major decision over Truett McConnell's Toby House before pinning teammate Antwane Webster. Celestine advanced to the third-place match with a 17-12 decision over Elliot. He then earned a 7-2 decision over Huntingdon's Damion Jones.

 Jostyn Cardenas-Zayas finished fourth in the 197-pound bracket. Zayas opened his tournament with a second-period pin of Huntingdon's Kameron Collins. He recorded his second pin in the quarterfinals in 1:38 over Schreiner's James McDaniel. Zayas fell to the consolation bracket with a 20-4 loss to Life's Gio Jackson. He pinned Schriener's Hadrian Edwards in the consolation semifinals before falling in the third-place match.

Nathan Payton finished fifth at 149 pounds. Payton opened his tournament with a 19-8 decision over Louisiana Tech's Samuel Favaza and pinned Huntingdon's Christian Clay in the second round. He dropped a 5-4 decision over David Panone in the quarterfinals. Payton won his next two consolation matches before medically forfeiting in the consolation semifinals. He earned fifth after Panone medically forfeited.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on January 9 for the Missouri Valley Duals in Marshall, Missouri.
