BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's wrestling team finished third at the Mid-South Conference Championship on Friday at Ephram White Gym.
Following the conclusion of the championship,
Devane Dodgens was voted the MSC Women's Wrestling Coach of the Year by his peers. Dodgens becomes the first coach in program history to earn the honor.
The Blue Raiders totaled 163.5 points to finish third in the 13-team field and had six All-Conference finishers. Life (Ga.) captured the team title with 211.5 points, while Indiana Tech finished runner-up with 164 points.
Grace Lashinsky (No. 6 at 117) finished runner-up at 117 pounds. Lashinsky pinned Sienna Heights' (Mich.) Arden Esctruth in 3:18 in the first round. Lashinsky then defeated teammate
Callie Payton (No. 9 at 117) 6-2 in the semifinals. In the finals, she was defeated 6-2 by Life's Salyna Shotwell (No. 2 at 117).
Kamilah Brooks (No. 4 at 124) posted a runner-up finish in the 124-pound bracket. Brooks opened her tournament with an 8-6 decision over Cumberlands' (Ky.) Caitlin Castro. In the quarterfinals, Brooks earned a 5-1 decision against Addison Messerly (No. 17 at 124) of Campbellsville (Ky.). She pinned Life's (Ga.) Anna Krejsa (No. 3 at 124) with just 12 seconds left. Brooks trailed 8-3 with less than a minute to go in the match. Krejsa led 9-7 with 21 seconds remaining before Brooks recorded the pin. She fell 9-1 to Indiana Tech's Rose Kaplan (No. 2 at 124) in the first-place match.
Katelyn Lewis (No. 12 at 180) finished runner-up at 180 pounds. Lewis pinned Montreat's Audrey Gribble in just 54 seconds in the first round. She then needed just 40 seconds to pin Kaylyn Lawson of Georgetown (Ky.) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Lewis earned a 9-8 decision over Cumberlands' Saiheron Preciado-Meza (No. 3 at 180). She was defeated 12-0 by Life's Reka Busa (No. 1 at 180).
Payton finished third to earn All-Conference honors. She opened her tournament with a 10-0 tech fall over Elizabeth Dollar of Indiana Tech. After falling to Lashinsky, Payton earned a 10-0 tech fall against Sheyla Ochoa Salgado of Montreat (N.C.). In the third-place match, she pinned Dollar in 51 seconds.
Jeila Ramos (No. 7 at 131) finished third in the 131-pound bracket. Ramos defeated Kathleen Fisher of Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 10-0 in the first round. Ramos advanced to the semifinals with a 12-0 tech fall over Olivia Messerly (No. 20 at 131) of Campbellsville. She was defeated 9-2 in the semifinals by Life's Olivia Mottley (No. 4 at 131). Ramos pinned Cumberlands' Mary Jane Porter (No. 14 at 131) in the consolation semifinals. She defeated Messerly in the third-place match.
Kori Campbell (No. 5 at 145) finished third at 145 pounds. Campbell earned a 10-0 tech fall over Montreat's Uriah Peters-Guiterrez in the first round. Campbell was then defeated by Genesis Gilmore (No. 11 at 145) of Cumberlands 10-0 in the quarterfinals. She pinned Sienna Heights' Eakins in 1:24 in her first consolation match. Campbell advanced to the consolation semifinals with a pin of Alivia Ming (No. 13 at 145) of Cumberlands. She earned a 2-1 decision over Campbellsville's Gabriella Perez (No. 9 at 145). In the third-place match, she defeated Indiana Tech's Hayden Newberg (No. 10 at 145) 2-1.
Lexi Ritchie (No. 11 at 138) placed fourth at 138 pounds. Ritchie pinned Montreat's (N.C.) Isabella Campbell in 2:11 in the first round. Ritchie then pinned Campbellsville's Lauren Walton in the second period. In the semifinals, she was pinned by Life's Zaynah McBryde (No. 2 at 138). Ritchie pinned Cumberlands' Ruth Jimenez (No. 15 at 138) in the consolation semifinals. She injury defaulted in the third-place match.
Hayeni Costa (No. 7 at 207) finished fourth at 207. Costa earned a 10-0 tech fall over Montreat's Haileigh Branscome in the first round. Costa pinned Lourdes' (Ohio) Napai Holloway in 44 seconds to advance to the semifinals. She was pinned by Cumberlands' Naomi Duenas (No. 8 at 207) and then pinned teammate
Cheyenne Cruce (No. 13 at 207) in the consolation semifinals. She dropped an 8-1 decision to Cumberlands' Destiny Marquez in the third-place match.
Cruce posted a fifth-place finish. She opened her tournament with an 11-0 loss to Cumberlands' Destiny Marquez. She then earned back-to-back pins over Montreat's Haileigh Branscome and Brewton-Parker's Rubiesemifinals Barton before falling to Costa. Cruce needed just 49 seconds to pin Georgetown's Jasmin Beckham in the fifth-place match.
Reagan Thomas (No. 10 at 110) finished fifth at 110 pounds. Thomas fell 12-2 in the first round to Julia Snyder of Rochester Christian (Mich.). She then earned a 12-2 tech fall over Cumberlands' Kaylin Taylor. In the consolation semifinals, Thomas was defeated 12-2 by Indiana Tech's Makenzie Smith. She pinned Aveona Edwards of Siena Heights in 1:32 to finish fifth.
Skyler Randolph and
Brielle Bibla (No. 13 at 138) finished sixth and 103 and 138 pounds, respectively.
Payton, Lashinsky, Brooks, Ramos, Ritchie, Bibla, Campbell, Lewis, and Costa earned automatic bids into the NAIA National Championship based on their finishes.
The Blue Raiders now turn their attention to the NAIA National Championship taking place March 14-15 at Park City Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
