Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cumberlands Uses First Half Run to Defeat Men's Basketball

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Lindsey Wilson men's basketball hit 17 3-pointers inside the O. Wayne Rollins Center, but it was not enough to overcome No. 17 Cumberlands (Ky.) as the homestanding Patriots topped the Blue Raiders 96-75 on Saturday afternoon.

Mihail Gavazov paced the visitor's offense with a season-high 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting from behind the 3-point line. The freshman also pulled down five rebounds, dished out two assists, and made two blocks.

Kenyata Carbon tallied 17 points to go alongside seven assists and six rebounds, and Julian Cunningham knocked down four 3-points as part of his 14-point effort.

A 3-pointer by Carbon put Lindsey Wilson ahead 8-6 early in the first half. Victory Naboya followed up with a fastbreak layup before Gavazov scored the next five points to push the Blue Raiders ahead 15-6 at the 15:24 mark of the half. Out of the first media timeout, Cumberlands started to close the gap and eventually knotted the score at 22-22 at just under 10 minutes to halftime. Carbon connected on another long shot to edge Lindsey Wilson in front 25-23, but the Patriots responded on a 19-3 run to end the first.

The Blue Raiders pulled the deficit down to single digits initially in the second half as Cunningham hit back-to-back 3-pointers. A free throw by Naboya cut the Patriots' lead to 48-40 at 16:36. From there, however, Cumberlands quickly restored its double-digit lead and pulled away.

As a team, Lindsey Wilson shot 40.3 percent from the field and 44.7 percent from 3-point range. After attempting only two free throws in the first half, the Blue Raiders ended the game 8-of-9.

Cumberlands held a 42-29 advantage on the glass, doubling the Blue Raiders on offensive boards.

Saturday's result marks the end of the Mid-South Conference regular season as Lindsey Wilson falls to 18-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.

The conference is slated to announce the full seven-team postseason bracket on Saturday evening.
