Baseball Takes Series Opener at Cumberland 9-5

LEBANON, Tenn.The Lindsey Wilson baseball team defeated  Cumberland (Tenn.) Phoenix 9-5 in game one of the series on Friday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field. 

The Blue Raiders move to 10-15 on the season and 2-2 in the Mid-South Conference. The Phoenix move to 12-15 on the season and 0-4 in MSC play. 

Lindsey Wilson starting pitcher Jack Ballou went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out five batters. Kyle Lambert earned his first win of the year, bringing his record to 1-0 on the season. Lambert went the final four innings of the ball game, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Jaron Keyser was given his third loss of the season for the Phoenix, bringing his record to 0-3. Cumberland starting pitcher Logan Baskin went 6.0+ innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out six batters. At the plate, Lindsey Wilson was led by Keith Stewart and Andres Duran. Stewart went 3-4 with three RBIs, a double, and a home run. Duran went 2-5, including two RBIs and a double. Offensively, Cumberland was led by Aiden McDonald and Gabriel Reyes. McDonald went 2-5 with an RBI, while Reyes went 2-4 with two RBIs and a home run.

The Blue Raiders got on the board first via a Stewart RBI double in the top of the first inning. Stewart struck again, this time in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run, doubling the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0. An inning later, in the top of the fifth inning, Drake Young homered to make the score 3-0 Blue Raiders. 

Cumberland took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, courtesy of a McDonald RBI single, Caleb Royer RBI double, and Reyes' two-run home run, making the score 4-3 Phoenix. JT Kelenic gave Cumberland a two-run lead after he homered in the bottom of the sixth. 

Lindsey Wilson cut the lead to one after an Orion Hahm-Taklander RBI single in the top of the seventh to cut the Blue Raider deficit to 5-4. The Blue Raiders tied the game in the eighth when Diego Andino scored on an error. Lindsey Wilson took the lead for good in the top of the ninth when they scored four runs. Duran had a two RBI single, Andino followed with another RBI knock, and Stewart also drove in one with an RBI base hit. Lambert worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to give the Blue Raiders their second conference victory of the season.

Games two and three of the series are scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. CT at Ernest L. Stockton Field.
