Baseball Takes Series at Cumberland With Doubleheader Split

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team split a doubleheader against Cumberland (Tenn.) Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field. 

The Blue Raiders (11-16, 3-3 Mid-South Conference)  were defeated in game one by a score of 9-0. In game two, the Blue Raiders defeated the Phoenix (13-16, 1-5 MSC) 8-4.  

Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 0, Cumberland 9

Game one was all Phoenix as they shut out the Blue Raiders 9-0. Lindsey Wilson starting pitcher Easton Talley pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, walking one, and striking out six. Talley's record moves to 1-4 on the season. Cumberland starting pitcher Mateo Santos pitched a complete game shutout, pitching all seven innings, allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out six. LWU was shut down offensively by Santos. At the plate, Cumberland was led by Caleb Royer and Gabriel Reyes. Royer went 2-4 with a double and a home run. Reyes went 1-3 with 3 RBIs. 

Cumberland scored early in the bottom of the first inning via a Royer RBI double and a two-run single by Reyes, giving the Phoenix a 3-0 lead. In the third inning, Reyes drove in a run with a sac fly, followed by a Blue Raider error that gave Cumberland another run. JT added two more runs with a two-run home run, padding the lead to 7-0. In the fourth inning, Royer added a solo home run to make the lead 8-0. In the fifth, Camden Williamson added the ninth run via a sac fly. 

Game 2: Lindsey Wilson 8, Cumberland 4

The Blue Raiders defeated the Phoenix by a score of 8-4 in the series finale. Lindsey Wilson starting pitcher Cassian Batholomew pitched 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one, and striking out six. Bartholomew got his third win of the season, moving his record to 3-1. Cumberland starting pitcher Carter Whitefield went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out five. Whitefield got the loss, moving his record to 2-1 on the season.  Caden Davis led the way for the Blue Raiders. Davis went 3-5 with 6 RBIs including a three-run home run and a three-run double. Dylan LaRue and Aiden McDonald led the way for Cumberland at the plate. Larue went 2-4 with a double, while McDonald went 1-4 with two runs batted in. 



The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first with an Aiden McDonald two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Innings two through five were scoreless for both teams. The Blue Raiders got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a three-run home run by Davis to give Lindsey Wilson the 3-2 lead. In the top of the eighth inning, Davis delivered again, this time with a three-run double. Lindsey Wilson added a total of five runs in the top of the eighth to move the lead to 8-2. Cumberland didn't go down without a threat in the bottom of the ninth inning. Two runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning were not enough to prevent Lindsey Wilson from winning the series with an 8-4 win in game three. 

The Blue Raiders are next in action on Tuesday at 2 p.m. CT at Egnew Park.
