LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team was defeated by the No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies 8-3, Friday evening at the Grizzlies Baseball Complex.
Lindsey Wilson moves to 17-24 on the year, while the Grizzlies move to 38-5 on the season.
Games two and three are scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. CT at Grizzlies Baseball Complex.
Lindsey Wilson starting pitcher, Jack Ballou, pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on ten hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Ballou drops to 3-3 on the season.
Georgia Gwinnett's starting pitcher, Shane Anderson, pitched 7.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out seven, and allowing zero free passes. Anderson earns his fifth victory of the season, moving his record to 5-0.
Leading the way offensively for Lindsey Wilson was Bryce Sidler. Sidler went 3-4 with two runs scored, a triple, and a stolen base.
For Georgia Gwinnett, Jay O'Neill and Payton Fort led the way. O'Neill went 3-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a home run. Fort went 2-4 with a run scored, four RBIs, and a triple.
Lindsey Wilson got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Sidler tripled and scored on an Andres Duran RBI fielder's choice to give LWU the early 1-0 lead. Georgia Gwinnett tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a Peyton Watts leadoff home run. The Grizzlies took the lead in the second when Fort drove home Jackson Legg with an RBI single to make the score 2-1.
In the fourth inning, Georgia Gwinnett scored four runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing three-run triple by Fort. Watts' double scored Fort to give GGC the 6-1 advantage. Lindsey Wilson fought back with a run in the seventh when Sidler stole third and scored on an overthrow to make the game 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh, O'Neill drove in two runs with a two-run home run to center field, giving the Grizzlies the 8-2 lead. LWU managed to score one in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Keith Stewart, but ultimately fell short, 8-3.
