BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The (RV) Lindsey Wilson volleyball team picked up a straight-set decision over in-state foe Union Commonwealth (Ky.) on Thursday evening.
Playing in front of a large, home crowd, the Blue Raiders came out with plenty of momentum in the opening set. Lindsey Wilson recorded 12 kills while limiting Union Commonwealth to five kills and a -.095 hitting percentage. A seven-point run with two kills from
Tully Bew was the difference as it opened a 20-11 lead for the visitors. The Blue Raiders went on to outscore the Bulldogs 5-1 to close the set and win it 25-14.
Union Commonwealth kept the second set close and held the advantage for much of the frame. Lindsey Wilson responded late, putting together a five-point run to erase a 23-20 deficit and tie the set at 23-23. The Blue Raiders then claimed the final two points, including a block by
Luisina Sandrone Tais and
Parker Sutherland, to complete the comeback and take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-23 win.
Lindsey Wilson maintained control in the third set while working through different systems and lineup combinations. The Bulldogs challenged the Blue Raiders late, even taking a 21-20 edge, but Lindsey Wilson held its composure behind kills from Sutherland and
Brooke Robinson to secure the 28-26 victory and complete the sweep.
The Blue Raiders finished with a 42-30 advantage in kills, while also recording four service aces and four blocks.
Gabi Zuquelo and Sandrone Tais led the Lindsey Wilson attack with eight kills apiece, while
Sofija Pjevic added seven in her season debut.
Rachel Kilchenmann paced the Blue Raider offense with 17 assists, followed by
Addison Janes with 15. Pjevic, Sandrone Tais and Sutherland each recorded two blocks, while
Layla HuYoung finished with a team-high two service aces.
Janes anchored the defense with seven digs, while
Kennedy Moone and Sandrone Tais each added six.
The Blue Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, August 25, at Biggers Sports Center in Columbia, KY.
