COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team opened Mid-South Conference play with a victory, beating Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 1-0 on Friday night on Ray Wells Field inside Walter S, Reuling Stadium.
Patrick Chisunga broke through late in the first half, scoring the only goal of the game. The Blue Raiders (2-2) outshot the Lions (3-1-3) 14-7 and 4-3 in shots on goal. Andrew Tomlinson, Renny Caicedo, and Lucas Migon all had a shot on goal. Zahir Garcia had a 1.000 save percentage, saving three shots.
Lindsey Wilson started the first half aggressively, taking five shots in the first 15 minutes of the
match. In the 29th minute, Chisunga was issued a yellow card after a foul call. Two minutes later, he dribbled past a swarm of Lions in the box and was able to score his first goal of the season.
In the lasting seconds of the first half, Freed-Hardeman caught the Blue Raiders sleeping, and they were able to put a shot on goal, but Garcia was able to come up with the save.
In the 49th minute, the Lions had another chance to score, but Garcia was able to deny them once again. Both teams had near goals, but none of them were able to find the back of net. In the 85th minute, Chisunga was issued a red card, and Lindsey Wilson was down a man for the rest of the game. The Blue Raiders survived by another save by Garcia in the 87th minute and a blocked attempt in the 89th minute, which allowed the Blue Raiders to come up with the win.
Lindsey Wilson will go back on the road Saturday, September 12, to face No. 16 Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Indiana.
