Box Score WISE, Va. -- Lindsey Wilson College defeated the University of Virginia at Wise 51-22, securing a third-place finish in the Mid-South Conference East Division. The win brings the inaugural Blue Raider football season to a close with a 5-6 overall record and 4-2 mark in the MSC East.
UVa.-Wise trailed 16-7 at halftime and after Lindsey Wilson scored two touchdowns in the second half, the Cavaliers scored 15 straight points to climb back within eight, 30-22 with under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
With the offense needing a jolt to avoid giving up its lead, Lindsey Wilson got a huge kickoff return by Richard Kennedy down to the Cavs 30-yard line. A few plays later, Kennedy finished off the drive on the ground to push the Blue Raiders back on top 37-22.
The Lindsey Wilson defense played its part late in the game as Sammy Smith picked off a pass for a touchdown to put the Blue Raiders up 44-22. Then in the final stages of the game Dakota Brown took a dive play 51 yards to give Lindsey Wilson its final advantage of 51-22.
The interception was the seventh turnover of the game for UVa.-Wise and the first interception return for a touchdown of the season for the Blue Raiders.
For Lindsey Wilson, the season ends on a high note as it finishes with a 3-3 record in home games and 2-3 showing in games on the road.
The Cavs said goodbye to eight senior players prior to the start of the game with senior day festivities, while the Blue Raiders played the final game of the season with no seniors or juniors on the roster.
