BARDSTOWN, Ky. -- It was lucky seven for Lindsey Wilson College today as the Blue Raiders captured their seventh straight Mid-South Conference Women's Golf Championship title at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
The Blue Raiders will earn the conference's automatic bid into next month's NAIA National Championship at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn. if they maintain their top-25 national ranking.
With just five institutions competing instead of the necessary six, Lindsey Wilson must wait until next week's final ranking to secure the bid.
Lindsey Wilson increased its opening round lead on Tuesday to win the 36-hole tournament by 17 strokes over second place University of the Cumberlands. Lindsey Wilson shot a two-day total of 669 (331-338) while Cumberlands finished with a 686 (344-342).
The entire field encountered heavy rains and high winds on a saturated course which inflated the scores over the two days.
Campbellsville University finished third with a 691 (342-249) while Georgetown College (386-425) and St. Catharine College (440-410) finished fourth and fifth with team scores of 811 and 850 respectively.
Lindsey Wilson freshman Kaitlin Allan (84-81) and sophomore Kelsey Joslyn (81-84) tied for medalist honors after the pair tied with 165s. Allan earned her first career tournament title after winning with a par on the second playoff hole.
Allan led the tournament with three birdies and finished with the best scoring averaging on both the par 4s and par 5s.
Lindsey Wilson senior Chelsey Key finished tied for third with a 168 (83-85) while junior Paola Gonzalez ended in a tie for sixth with a 171 (83-88. Sophomore Jennifer MacKinnon tied for 12 following a 178 (86-92). Freshman Candace Stacy -- playing as an individual -- tied for 14th with a 180 (88-92).
Following the tournament, the all-conference awards were handed out.
Despite not earning medalist honors in today's tournament, Joslyn did take home an important piece of hardware as she earned MSC Women's Golfer of the Year. The award is based on scoring in all three conference sanction tournaments -- one in the fall and two in the spring.
Allan joined Joslyn on the all-conference team in addition to being named MSC Women's Golfer Freshman of the Year. Key and Gonzalez earned all-conference honorable mention for their play during the season.
Prior to the event, Joslyn was one of 16 student-athletes who were recognized as Academic All Mid-South Conference for maintaining at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and being a sophomore or above in academic or athletic standing.
The tournament win is the fifth of the season for the Blue Raiders.
