COLUMBIA, Ky. – Top-ranked Lindsey Wilson College extended its winning streak in men's soccer to 30 games, but it wasn't a thing of beauty, needing a free kick by Yazeed Davids to top Vanguard (Calif.) 1-0 on Friday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
Davids struck in the 16th minute after a Lion foul just outside the penalty box on the left side. He lined up to take the free kick and never thought about dishing it off as he rifled the ball to the upper right side of the goal and into the back of the net.
Lindsey Wilson needed that goal as it was outshot by Vanguard 14-9, including an 8-2 mark in the second half with the Lions controlling the offensive momentum.
Vanguard took seven corner kicks in the game and had plenty of possessions inside the box in the second half, but the ball never seemed to bounce right for it to tie up the game and make a run at the upset.
Davids paced the Blue Raiders in shots with three, while the team finished with five shots on goal. Kevin Cornwall took six shots for Vanguard as the Lions ended up with just three on target as a team.
Both team's goalkeepers, Yuta Nomura for Lindsey Wilson and Luca Licciardi for the Lions, finished with three saves, while Vanguard also got credit for one team save in the first half.
Twenty-five fouls were called in the game with the Blue Raiders leading 13-12. There were also six cautions, all yellow cards.
Vanguard fired the final four shots in the game as it made a flurry of aggressive attacks at Nomura and the Blue Raider defense down the stretch to no avail.
Prior to the game, Blue Raider head coach Ray Wells was given a ball signed by the current roster to commemorate his 500th career win recorded earlier this season against St. Xavier. Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr., was on hand to deliver the ball to Wells.
The Blue Raiders are back in action at 1 p.m. CT on Monday against Florida Memorial on a neutral field at the Auburn Montgomery campus in Montgomery, Ala.
