COLUMBIA, Ky. – Three different Blue Raiders scored a goal as the top-ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team took care of Cumberland (Tenn.) 3-1 on Tuesday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
Just prior to winning its 33rd straight game, Lindsey Wilson received its 10th straight No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Coaches' Poll and showed why with an array of quality goals combined with a staunch defensive effort.
Eddy Campbell got things started in the 21st minute as he started on the right side of the penalty box where he split a pair of Bulldog defenders through the middle before pushing the ball past goalkeeper Sully Shattuck for the early lead.
Lebogang Moloto made it a 2-0 Blue Raider lead in the 30th minute after finishing a close-range goal off a pass from Yazeed Davids, while Philip Sandgren scored the final goal in the 76th minute off a rebound of Campbell's blocked shot.
Cumberland avoided the shutout by finishing off a penalty-kick opportunity in the 77th minute. Lindsey Wilson's Kirk de Boer was whistled for a foul at the top of the box, allowing Mark Harrison to boot the kick into the back left side of the net.
Apart from that PK chance, the Blue Raiders dominated the offensive flow of the game, leading in shots 18-5, including a 9-3 margin in shots on goal.
Moloto, a precision passer in the Blue Raider midfield, got into the shooting act against the Bulldogs, firing a game-high five with two on frame. All three of Campbell's shots were on goal, including the highlight-reel quality opening score.
Tevonne Morris paced Cumberland with two shots, while Shattuck finished with a game-high six saves. Lindsey Wilson used Yuta Nomura in goal for 83 minutes with two saves and the one goal allowed as Jesper Malmstrom played the final seven minutes without needing to make a save.
Lindsey Wilson's next test is on the road at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 29 at second-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio). The Blue Raiders and RedStorm each help their places in the poll at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, setting up the NAIA top-two battle.
