COLUMBIA, Ky. – Five players scored in double figures for the Blue Raiders as the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team defeated Ohio State-Mansfield 114-82 on Saturday in Biggers Sports Center.
Charles Sutton, Kevin Windley, Dmitry Utolin, Hannes Erhardt, and Pepper Ben Ofokile each recorded double-digit point totals in the Blue Raiders' (3-0) win over the Mavericks (0-1).
Both teams struggled to find a rhythm to begin the game with numerous turnovers, and neither team could pull away early in the first half. The Blue Raiders had nine turnovers in the half with the Mavericks turning the ball over 15 times in the half and 23 times total in the game.
Ohio State-Mansfield took a 28-26 lead with 7:55 to go after a three pointer by Daishawn Jones.
But then things changed.
The Blue Raiders stopped turning the ball over and started attacking the basket. Lindsey Wilson converted on 13-of-18 free throws in the first half compared to 1-of-3 for the Mavericks. The Blue Raiders went on a 25-10 run over the final seven-plus minutes to take a 51-38 lead into halftime.
Lindsey Wilson continued its strong play in the second half and the game was never close. The Blue Raiders aggressively attacked the basket making layups and drawing fouls. Lindsey Wilson shot 16-of-25 from the stripe in the second half, and 29-of-43 for the game.
The Blue Raiders shot 58.0 percent for the game, including 66.7 percent in the second half, while holding the Mavericks to 43.7 percent shooting for the game.
Behind the strong offensive and defensive play, Lindsey Wilson extended its lead until the margin of victory was 32 and the final score was 114-82.
The Blue Raiders were led offensively by Sutton's 25 points and Windley's 22 points. Utolin scored 12 points, Ofokile garnered 13 points, and Erhardt tallied 10 points. Windley and Ofokile recorded nine rebounds each to come within one rebound of a double-double. Sutton was the top playmaker with five assists, and Sutton, Utolin, and Bryan Wallace recorded three steals each.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Jalen Jones, who scored 14 points, and Trevor Mcghee, who tallied 13 points. Bradley Garverick had a solid all-around game with 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The Blue Raiders next take the court against Culver Stockton (Mo.) at 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday as part of the Central Methodist Classic in Fayette, Mo.
