Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the second time in two games to start the season, the ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team used an overtime golden goal to emerge victorious, this time taking down William Carey (Miss.) 3-2 on Monday night.
In a game that saw three lead changes, the Blue Raiders (2-0) and Crusaders (1-1) battled back-and-forth until the game eventually went into overtime tied at 2-2.
Once in the overtime period, it took Lindsey Wilson just 73 seconds to find the game-winning goal. Aleksi Pahkasalo fed the ball to Franco Roman, who was making his debut as a Blue Raider, who fired into the back of the net to give Lindsey Wilson their second overtime win in two games this season.
Prior to the game winner, the Blue Raiders found themselves in an early hole to start the game after a shot by William Carey's Johnny Buckle found its way into the back of the net in the third minute to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0.
The lead would not last long though as Lindsey Wilson found the equalizer in the 15th minute. Yusuf Ackers delivered a ball to Billal Qsiyer who fired into the net to bring things level at 1-1.
Both squads continued to test the opposing keeper, but neither was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the half.
The opening 45 minutes saw Lindsey Wilson take five shots, four on target, while the Crusaders got off four shots, three on target. William Carey's Josh Carpenter made three saves in the first half while Blue Raider keeper Yuta Nomura made two, both coming within 40 seconds of each other around the 30th minute.
As the second half began, the Blue Raiders upped the offensive pressure immediately.
In the first eight minutes after the break, Lindsey Wilson fired off eight shots, five of which were blocked by the Crusader defenders. The closest attempt came in the 51st minute as Qsiyer hit the crossbar going for his second goal of the evening.
After the Crusaders weathered the initial Blue Raider storm of attacks, Lindsey Wilson managed just a pair of corner kicks over the next 15 minutes.
The Blue Raiders resumed their attacking ways in the 69th minute when Pahkasalo delivered a corner kick into the six-yard box. Lindsey Wilson newcomer Caue Salgado met Pahkasalo's cross with a header that sailed into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.
The scoring would not end there, however, as the Crusaders canceled out the two-goal Blue Raider comeback and took their turn to equalize on the night. Ten minutes after the Salgado goal, William Carey's Lauri Tuohisto-Kokko scored to bring the game back level at 2-2 with just over 11 minutes to play. It was the Crusader's first shot of the second half and first since the 31st minute of the game.
Lindsey Wilson managed just two shots in the final 10 minutes as the game went to overtime tied at 2-2.
Shortly into the overtime period, Roman scored his first career goal as a Blue Raider in the 92nd minute seal the 3-2 victory.
Lindsey Wilson outshot William Carey 19-6 on the night and held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks in a physical game that saw 22 fouls committed.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday as they remain on the road with a trip up to Lima, Ohio to take on No. 2-ranked Northwestern Ohio.
