Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – Yuta Yamamoto scored his first collegiate goal in the 106th minute to give the 23rd-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team a 4-3 victory over 18th-ranked Northwestern Ohio on Saturday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
Andres Riquelme chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Blue Raiders (2-2-0), while Brian Richards and Mutaya Mwape each recorded their first goals of the season against the Racers (3-1-1).
Northwestern Ohio took an early lead in the game as Carlos Garces Suarez scored in the fifth minute for the Racers. Ludvig Hordegard sent the ball into the box off a corner kick and Alonso Castro flicked the ball onto Graces Suarez who headed the ball into the net.
The Blue Raiders answered five minutes later as Riquelme sent in a lobbed cross from the left flank over to Richards who blasted a volley past the Northwestern Ohio goalkeeper. Richards was just outside the six-yard box and he beat the keeper to the far side to tie the match at one.
Both teams continued to push the pace and in the 19th minute Lindsey Wilson was awarded a penalty kick after a Racer foul in the penalty area. Mwape took the penalty kick for the Blue Raiders and with the goalkeeper jumping to the left; Mwape placed his shot to the right side of the net to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 lead.
In the 29th minute, Northwestern Ohio was awarded a penalty kick of their own and chance to tie the match. Pascal Debowiak took the penalty kick and he tied the game, 2-2, after finessing the ball into the left side of the goal.
The Racers had a free kick to the right of the penalty area and with the kick played short, Sean Latimer's original shot ping-ponged inside the 18-yard box. Carlos Monterrey found the ball at his feet and he beat Alvaro Cortazar to the right to give Northwestern Ohio a 3-2 lead in the 40th minute.
Riquelme tied the game up for Lindsey Wilson in the 50th minute as he sent in a shot from 35 yards out. Riquelme's shot was just above the outreaching arms of Nikola Kahvedzic and dipped into the top left corner of the net.
After a wide-open game throughout the first half, the match started to settle down following the third Blue Raider goal.
With nine minutes to play in regulation, Andrew Revanales had some space in the penalty area and he laid the ball off to Richards, but the shot from Richards sailed just over the crossbar.
The game went into overtime after neither team could find a tiebreaker in regulation.
Yamamoto scored the golden goal in the 106th minute for Lindsey Wilson. Revanales sent a cross in from a corner kick and after the ball rattled around in the box Richards put a shot on goal that was stopped by the Racer goalkeeper. Yamamoto was near the goal line to put the rebound home and give the Blue Raiders a 4-3 victory.
The Blue Raiders defeated Northwestern Ohio for the first time in program history with the victory on Saturday night. The all-time series is now 2-1-0 in favor of the Racers.
Cortazar made seven saves in the match for the Blue Raiders.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Tuesday night as they host Life (Ga.) at 7 p.m. CT to start their Mid-South Conference schedule.
