Men's Basketball falls to No. 2 Georgetown 73-62

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team suffered a 73-62 setback on the road to No. 2-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) on Thursday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium.

The Blue Raiders (14-7, 2-4 Mid-South Conference) outscored the host Tigers (18-1, 6-0 MSC) 38-37 in the second half, but it was not enough to erase a 12-point first half deficit.

Charles Sutton finished with a 21 point, 10 rebound double-double, his third of the season. He now has 992 career points, just eight shy of becoming the 12th member of the 1,000 point club in program history. Bryan Wallace was the lone other Blue Raider into double figures with 18.

Lindsey Wilson had a better shooting percentage on the night (38.9 to 37.5 percent) and held the rebounding advantage 41-35, but the Tigers made 10 shots from beyond the arc and committed eight fewer turnovers (20-12).

Both teams started the game sluggishly, coming up empty on each of their four possessions to begin the contest. Georgetown quickly found a rhythm thanks to Trent Gilbert. The junior guard hit five of his first six three-point attempts, accounting for Georgetown's first 15 points of the game as the Tigers led 15-6. Lindsey Wilson opened the game shooting just 2-for-10 from the floor, while the first non-Gilbert basket for the Tigers came at the 12:17 mark to make it 17-8.

Despite the shooting struggles, the Blue Raiders continued to hang tough and cut the lead down to six points at 28-22 after a Sutton field goal at the 3:57 mark. Lindsey Wilson had a chance to bring things even closer a few possessions later, but a blocked Blue Raider shot led to a Georgetown three pointer to make it 31-22 at the 2:43 mark.

Lindsey Wilson scored one more basket and held Georgetown scoreless for nearly the final two minutes of play, but Darion Burns drained a three from midcourt as the halftime buzzer sounded to give Georgetown a 36-24 lead at the break.

Lindsey Wilson hit just 8-of-24 shots (33.3 percent) in the first half and did not make an attempt from beyond the arc (0-for-2), but hit all eight of their free throw attempts. Georgetown shot 31.4 percent from the floor (13-for-35), but made eight three pointers.

The second half began with a trio of runs, two by Georgetown and one by the Blue Raiders. Georgetown rolled off seven-straight points to increase their lead to 19, the largest of the game, only for Lindsey Wilson to answer right back with seven straight of their own. But the Tigers had another six-point spurt to go up 51-33 with 14:31 to play.

The Blue Raiders continued to battle, trimming the lead down to single digits at nine twice in the second half, but were unable to bring things any closer as the Tigers kept them at an arms' length away.

Lindsey Wilson remained in the game down the stretch as Georgetown struggled to connect from the free throw line, but the Blue Raiders were not able to string together bunches of points as the Tigers held on for the 73-62 victory.

Lindsey Wilson set a season high in blocks with eight in the loss, including a career-high four from Nic Brown. The Blue Raiders made their first 12 attempts from the charity stripe before concluding the game 17-for-22.

Gilbert scored a season-high 27 points with seven made three pointers for the Tigers. Troy Steward and Chris Coffey both had 12 points, Coffey adding 12 boards for a double-double. Georgetown finished 15-of-30 as a team from the free throw line.

The Blue Raiders remain on the road for their next matchup, a 3 p.m. CT tipoff at Shawnee State (Ohio) on Saturday.
