Baseball takes doubleheader at Union on Sunday

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson baseball swept a doubleheader on the road today, beating Union (Ky.) 7-5 and 10-1 at Carey Stadium.

The sweep is the first of the season for the Blue Raiders, who improve to 3-2.

Tyler Maskill led the Blue Raider offense with three hits and three runs batted in while Brady Cappe picked up his second win in as many starts this season to take today's opener.

Derek Zavala and Nico Martinez added two hits each as the Blue Raiders outhit their hosts 10-8 in game one.

Trailing 2-0, Maskill drove in Zavala to open the Lindsey Wilson scoring in a three-run third inning. It was the first of four straight innings the Blue Raiders dented the scoreboard. Maskill later scored on an error and Martinez trotted home on a fielder's choice to take the 3-2 lead.

Maskill drove in a run in the fourth with an RBI double and added a solo home run in the sixth inning to push the Blue Raider lead to 6-3.

Cappe took advantage of the offense with a solid effort on the mound. He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out seven in his 6-1/3 innings of work.

Jake McDaniel provided outstanding work in relief surrendering an unearned run on one hit over 2-1/3 innings. Cade Duncan picked up a save, facing just one batter with two men on the ninth to close out the game.

Bradley Hines hurled a six-inning complete game and Zavala added another two-hit game to lift the Blue Raiders to the 10-1 win and the sweep.

Hines allowed just one run while scattering six hits to pick up his first win of the season. He finished the game striking out six Bulldog hitters.

Lindsey Wilson posted its biggest scoring inning of the season in the third, plating 10 runs on four hits. The Blue Raiders also took advantage of four Union errors in the inning.

Zavala ended the game 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs. He had two hits in the decisive inning with a single and a two-run home run. Henry Paulino added a three-run shot in the inning.

The game was halted after six innings due to darkness.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Feb. 23, as they travel to No. 21-ranked Bryan (Tenn.) in Dayton, Tennessee.
