McKENZIE, Tenn. - Brady Cappe carried a no-hitter into the ninth on Friday evening against Bethel (Tenn.). However, two hits in the bottom leg of the inning proved to be the difference as the Wildcats needed only a walk-off single to take the first of the three-game weekend series.
Cappe's gem is the best start by a Lindsey Wilson pitcher since Ryan Hartman worked a no-hit bid into the ninth inning against Campbellsville (Ky.) on March 15, 2015.
By the end of the evening, the senior had retired 10 Wildcats on strikes, his third double-digit scoring effort of the season.
Bethel's Alex Valcarcel also turned in a complete-game effort, allowing zero runs on four hits while striking out five Blue Raiders.
Despite the work being done on the hill, it was the bats that ultimately did the job for the home side as a Nicholas Proto pinch-hit single scored the game's only run with only one out separating the two teams from extra innings.
Lindsey Wilson's best chance to break the ice came in the top of eighth off a Kelvin Llanos triple into deep right-center field, the only multi-base hit of the game.
The Blue Raiders (17-20, 11-11 MSC) would garner a second baserunner in the frame after Ty Menrath was hit by the first pitch of his at-bat, but the ensuing batter was retired on the following pitch to end the threat.
Llanos posted a game-high two hits while Menrath and Derek Zavala tallied a hit each for the visitors.
Lindsey Wilson and Bethel conclude their conference series on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
