Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie on the road with Georgetown College (Ky.) on Saturday. Despite the Blue Raiders (3-5-3, 2-2-1) outshooting the Tigers (6-1-5, 1-1-3), the two squads held up defensively to only give up two scores total.
A conference win streak by the Blue Raiders is no longer after facing a well rounded Tigers defense. This is the third tie of the year for Lindsey Wilson and the fifth for Georgetown.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Jake Mckettrick scored the first goal of the match. McKettrick was able to strike in one off a Blue Raider block to score into the bottom right corner of the post. The senior forward now has four goals on the season.
The Blue Raiders looked to respond shortly with a few on goal shots that could not find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Theren Handlon and the Georgetown backline managed to control the first half defensively by stopping 11 shots by Lindsey Wilson compared to just three for the half by the Tigers.
LWC stayed aggressive on the offensive end going into the second half after not being able to tie things up in the first. A handful of shots by the Blue Raiders were blocked and saved by the Georgetown defense after multiple scoring opportunities set up by Lindsey Wilson. Handlon finished with 11 saves on the day.
Pablo Costa, who stepped in during the 15th minute and the LWC defense were able to hold their ground long enough to create a flow of scoring opportunities late in the game. Costa made three key saves to keep the game within reach for the Blue Raiders in the second half.
Lindsey Wilson finally got their chance to even things up after knocking on the door many times with shots. A foul inside the box by the Tigers on a Jaland Larmond attack led to a penalty kick for the Blue Raiders taken by Alexander Koziolek.
Koziolek was able to sneak the shot right past Handlon to tie the score at one apiece in the 84th minute. The senior midfielder picks up his fourth goal of the season. Both teams got a few last minute chances at the post but were held scoreless as the final buzzer sounded off.
Lindsey Wilson outshot Georgetown 31-10 and had more shots on goal with a 12-4 margin but was not able to secure another score to pull this one off.
The Blue Raiders return home to Ray Wells Field at Walter S. Reuling Stadium next week on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to take on 13th-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 7 p.m. CT
