Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson baseball team shocked the No. 20-ranked Lions after a five-run first inning propelled the Blue Raiders over the hosts in a 10-9 win to open the final Mid-South Conference series of the regular season.
The Blue Raider bats were on fire to start the game as the club produced five runs on six hits in the top of the opening inning. The team went on finish the game with 16 hits while the Lions were held to 13 hits in their losing effort.
Cohen Achen got the start on the bump for LWC, going six innings while earning six strikeouts through 25 batters faced. Josh Barnett and Kyle Collin both came on in relief in the victory.
After the explosive opening from the Blue Raiders, it got even worse for the hosts as an RBI single from Michael Sizemore and a Gabe Board groundout scored two more runs in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
The Lions finally found their rhythm in the bottom of the fourth as an RBI double and a sacrifice fly put two runs on the board for the hosts.
A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning from the Lions made it 7-3 before Lucas Bault added an RBI double seventh to keep it a five-run ballgame.
The eighth inning turned into a home run derby as Jordan Blick added a solo home run for the Blue Raiders, his third on the season, making it 9-3 before the Lions responded with a three-RBI home run of their own cutting the lead to 9-6 heading into the final inning of play.
With the Lions poised with making the comeback, the Blue Raiders made that job much harder as Nico Martinez hit an RBI double extending the lead to 10-6. With Lindsey Wilson needing three outs to wrap up the win, head coach Ethan Utley turned to relief pitcher Kyle Collin in the bottom of the ninth. Collin did well to earn the first out on the first batter after a ground out to third.
Collin's night got much harder after that as the Lions produced three hits from the next three at-bats including a three-RBI home run to make it 10-9 with only one out. Collin proceeded to earn a strikeout before the Lions produced another hit and two walks to load the bases. With the game on the line, Collin remained calm and earned his second strikeout of the night, securing the 10-9 win for the Blue Raiders.
Blick led the team with a team-high three RBIs in today's victory while both Bault and Martinez had a team-high three hits. In total, eight different Blue Raiders had a hit in today's game while six had at least one RBI.
