DES MOINES, IOWA – The Lindsey Wilson men's wrestling team competed at the Grand View Open Saturday.
Brandon Irigoyen received a bye in the first round of the 157-pound bracket. In his first match, picked up a first-period pin over Grand View's Jon Peterka. He then fell to Cornerstone's Thade Radosa by a 12-1 major decision. Irigoyen closed out competition getting pinned in the second period by Nebraska's Ethan Stiles.
Jesus Avila opened his competition in the 165-pound weight class falling to William Penn's Ryan Van Donselaar by a 3-0 decision. Avila bounced back in the first consolation round picking up a 4-2 decision over Waldorf's Jackson Prescott. In the second consolation round, he lost by a 22-4 tech fall to William Penn's Cameron Hargrove.
Nine Blue Raiders competed in the Fresh/Soph brackets. Christopher Griel went 5-2 in the 285-pound bracket. Grier started his competition with first-period pin of Friends' Solomon Arrington and then picked up a 4-0 decision over St Ambrose's Abdullah Razzak. After losing a 7-4 decision, Griel rattled off three wins in the consolation bracket before ending his tournament to Cloud County's Darian Gillins.
Baylor Brooker started his day in the 157 pound fresh/soph bracket with back-to-back pins. He then fell in his next two matches. At 149 pounds, Drake Montelongo opened with an 8-4 decision over Avila's Terrell Carter-Williams. After a loss, Montelongo picked up three-straight wins in the consolation rounds before ending his tournament with a loss.
Taevis Cuff picked up one win in 149-pound bracket. Lucas Giles picked up an 18-2 tech fall over Northwestern's (Iowa) Julian Reyes Palma in the first round. Giles lost an 11-7 decision and then earned a fall in his first consolation match. Jager Ferguson picked up two wins at 133 pounds while Arlo Laxton won once at 133 pounds,
The Blue Raiders return to action on Nov. 18 for the Life U Open.
