Baseball Detonates on the Grenadiers

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Indiana Southeast's Zak Rasener had just entered the game when Lindsey Wilson's Matthew Schultz hit the game-ending grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rasener's appearance represented the Grenadiers' eighth different pitcher of the game, but it did not solve the problems the visitors were dealing with from the Blue Raiders' offense.

Schultz's first home run of the season brought an early end to what was scheduled to be a nine-inning contest between Lindsey Wilson and Indiana Southeast, and as the head coaches met at home plate to shake hands, it was the hosts collecting their second victory of the year over a ranked opponent, 11-1.

The Blue Raiders needed only two pitchers to get through the afternoon as Cohen Achen turned in another dazzling performance in the starting role before Kyle Collin stepped in to finish it out. Achen would end up retiring nine Grenadiers on strikes in six complete innings of work, surrendering the visitors' lone run on two hits, while Collin checked in the final frame and struck out two of the five batters he faced. It is the fifth time in five starts this season Achen has recorded at least seven strikeouts. Today's effort was also his lowest on the year in hits and runs allowed.

After only two hits between the two sides got down through the first two innings, the Blue Raiders finally broke through in the bottom leg of the third.

Freshman Trent Floden led off the frame with a double to right field, then was immediately pushed up a bag off a perfectly executed bunt-single by Michael Sizemore. Lindsey Wilson's leadoff man eventually became the day's first run when a fielder's choice to the middle infield allowed enough time for Floden to score standing up.

Chance Stayton kept the momentum flowing with a subsequent single to the left side, then a base-hit by Jordan Blick, fortunately, became a big scoring opportunity for the Blue Raiders after a mishandling by the Indiana Southeast defense cleared the way for two more runs to be plated.

Austin Rayno later singled home Blick for the home side's fourth and final run of the inning.

The Grenadiers got one back in the top of the fourth when their first hit of the day cleared the left field fence, but that was all they could get the rest of the way.

In the bottom half of the following inning, Stayton posted his third hit of the game to get things started for Lindsey Wilson and was quickly waved home off the bat of a double by Blick. The designated hitter scored himself a couple of batters later, this time courtesy of a line drive double by Lucas Bault to extend the Blue Raiders' lead to 6-1.

With Achen continuing to deal on the bump, the offense continued to provide some insurance. A fourth hit of the day by Stayton in the sixth inning plated Sizemore to make it a 7-1 scoreline, then a single crack of the bat by Schultz in the seventh frame proved to be the dagger.

All told, the locals went off for a season-high 13 hits, including five for extra bases. Stayton's big day paced the offense, and two hits each from Blick, Bault and Floden contributed to the onslaught.

Lindsey Wilson jumps back into its conference schedule this weekend in Ohio when the Blue Raiders take on Wilberforce University in a three-game, two-day series beginning on Saturday.
