Baseball Defeats Cumberland 13-7 in Series Finale

COLUMBIA, Ky. -  The Lindsey Wilson baseball team defeated No. 22 Cumberland 13-7 Sunday in the series finale at Egnew Park.

The Blue Raiders (17-22, 9-14 MSC) trailed 7-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Lindsey Wilson rallied tying the game in the seventh and scoring six runs in the eighth for the win.

Lindsey Wilson was led by Thorne Gray and Chance Stayton who each recorded three hits in the victory. Gray, Stayton and Rayno all drove in three runs while Gray, Rayno and Trent Floden each hit a home run.

Cumberland (28-10-1, 18-4 MSC) struck first in the second inning on a two-run home run from Tim Holyk. The Phoenix increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth after an error allowed a run to score. Matthew Schultz got Lindsey Wilson on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single.

Cole Turney gave Cumberland a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. Rayno drove in Paulino to trim the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Holyk hit his second home run of the game in the sixth. The Phoenix added two more runs in the inning to lead 7-2.

Stayton drove in a pair in the bottom of the sixth with a double to left field. In the bottom of the seventh, Gray tied the game with a three-run home run to left field. Lindsey Wilson took control in the eighth scoring six runs. A Phoenix balk gave the Blue Raiders an 8-7 lead. Rayno then hit a three-run home run  and Floden also hit a home run to lead 12-7. Stayton gave the Blue Raiders a 13-7 lead with an RBI-single.

Glenn Simes got the win pitching 3-1/3 innings of relief allowing just two hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Oakland City (Ind.)
