Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – At Walter S. Reuling Stadium-Ray Wells Field, Sebastian Tregarthen scored the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute to drive the hometown crowd into a frenzy and push the No. 5 Blue Raiders men's soccer team past (RV) West Virginia Tech, 2-1.
The electrifying strike scorched the back of the net as a 10-man Lindsey Wilson squad was nearing what would have been its first draw of the season. However, the home side's Uruguayan freshman had other ideas when a pass from Samuel Odame found his foot near the edge of the penalty box.
Tregarthen's team-leading sixth goal of the season capped off a back-and-forth second half in which both teams jousted for control but could not find any separation. It also came after the Blue Raiders had fought through the entire second half, and a small portion of the first half a man down as a result of a Lindsey Wilson red card.
Nevertheless, the Blue Raiders found the breakthrough they were searching for and improve to 4-1-0 and maintain their perfect form on home turf.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring early in the afternoon in the 2nd minute. Then, later in the half, Michael Acquah gathered in a low cross from Jaland Larmond and knotted the game with his third goal of the year.
From there, Pablo Costa and the Lindsey Wilson defense held West Virginia Tech silent and the Blue Raiders' persistent offense did the rest.
All told, Costa closed the afternoon with three saves, while as a team, Lindsey Wilson outshot the Golden Bears 13-6.
The men's soccer team faces a tall task next on the docket when it travels to Westfield, Indiana on Wednesday to challenge No. 1 Bethel (Ind.) at 3 p.m. CST.
